JOE ALLEN STOMPS AGAIN AT CHICO RAYMOND ROUTS WILDE'S WIN STREAK Getling well Into the racing season a t Chi co' s Cyc lela.nd Speedway, the fourth Saturday night race started with the 100cc class and the almost unbeatable J oe Allen tro m Palermo on a Kawasa1d won hi s heat an d came back to give the m a rough way to go In the Main. Starting fr om the 3D-yard handicap line, he worked his way through the pack to take over fi r st and s tretch out his lead. In s ec ond was John Allen on a Moto Beta, with F r ancis Ladara chasing him hard and Ji m Vlndly (Brldgestone) making It a real battle for s e cond place. But It seemed that the Allen boys were determi ned to take first and second, which the y did. Ending the 100cc Maln It was Joe Allen first, John Allen s econd, F r ancis Ladara holding third, an d Jim Vlndly ending UP fourth overall. The 200cc Maln started with the drop of the flag and Tom Jones ott and running good, gi vi ng the Amateurs and Experts a bad time for three laps. Then came the lime to take over and that's just what Dick Tunner di d. He roared fr om the 45yard li ne to take fir s t. ThIs lett Tom Jones In second, but not for long; Mike Rockwell on a Yamaha, seemed to have the Idea he be lo nged In s e cond and thi s put Jones back In the third spot. Jimmy Raymond changed sponsors and machines Wedn esday nigh t, May 22 a t Trojan Raceway, to com e UP with the short track co mbination that the 100cc r iders have been looking for all season _ a way to beat Paul Wilde an d his Ya maha Special. Jimmy went out on the Suzuki tr om Rio Hondo Marine and won his heat race , but Paul was In a dltterent heat, so their firs t battle was In the Trophy Im;h. P aul got ott to one of his usual good starts , took the lead, and In three laps Jimmy just couldn'tdoanythlng. But when the Main Event came around, lt had all the makings of a r ip-r oaring duel. Line d up next to P a ul and Jimmy was anoth er tiger from last year who Is on a short leave tr om Uncle Sam belor e he goes to Vietnam, and an yone who has seen Tom Warr en pilot hi s Bultaco around a short track knows that he Is a major threat. Jimmy was deter mi ned that thi s was goi ng to be his night, however . He took the lead Imm ediately and although Paul pus he d his Yamaha UP within s triking distance of the well-tuned Suz uki , was not able to get around. WUde had to setile for hi s fi r s t non- win of the year as To m Warr en pus hed his Bul taco to third. F ourth place went to Dan Hazel on a Yamaha while Sam Gardner o n a Honda fin ished tltth. You can bet that the battle between Paul and Jimmy will turn Into a po int duel In the 100cc class belore the season Is over. Story by Lisa Willis Corcoran Takes 250cc Class Mike Corcoran, Bultaco-mounted from Sacramento, took over Saturday night and could make no mistakes. Almost every Saturday night Corcoran makes a clean sweep, winning his heat and comlngback to take the Main with his usual last, smooth style. Running a real close second place was Ray vatne, better known as "Hole Shot" because of his last reactions off the line. Ray shot ott the25-yardllne In second and hung In til something went wrong and he had to retire, letting Bob Vaughn (Honda) move Into second and Ken Norberg on a Yam aha took third overall. The best description of the evening would be to say the track was In excellent shape, the races were last, there were relatively few spills and no injuries. Pit Talk For those of you who are Inter es ted In hearing some of the pit talk, here Is the latest at Chico. As you may know , the y run scratch races at Chico. It so happens Gary WUlls fr om Sacramento, on aH- D, went out an d won his heat hands down. So the ottlclals de cide d that he couldn't have gone that well without a little " extra." So they proceeded to check out what he had In the gas tank. Well, as It turned out It was only MobU. But the reason he didn't make the Main was because he was running something more, ·whlch he said he wished the ottlclals would have found for him . It was water In the mag. ThIs just goes to show you some bikes go better without being washed. (Results on page 20) By Mik e Capali te Lee Stumps' Em Again The 250cc bash was again dominated by Lee Stumpenhaus as he took the Trophy Dash and the Main Event. It Is evident that Lee's use of the compression release greatly assists him In getting around the course In Jig time, but even though the AMA bas ruled the use of them illegal In short track because they are a form of braking device, the ACA bas not ruled on this as yet, so they are still legal In the short track at Southern Callfornla's South Gate and Orange County courses . ThIs Is not to say that the reason Lee won was because he had a compression release, as the other five entries In the Maln Event were also compression release e qui p p e d 2- IN LANCASTER rrs strokes. It was more than evident that Lee Is r ider of top caliber as he slowly stretched his lead out every lap over second place man Carroll Skov. also Bultaco-mounted as were third and fourth place men Frank Barrena and Tom Warren. It was Jim Posey In tltth place on a new Yamaha single who stopped the complete dom ination of the 250c c main by Bultaco as Tom Yardman tlnls hed sixth on his Buflt--to-go, (Results on page 20) fA_AHA .
