Earl Penny, #134x on a Greeves really zapped the field in the 250cc Novice run, with a three-minute lead. Don McNamee, #156x, was second, an d Mike Hinshaw, #118x, was third. Larry Bergquist, #888x on a Buitaco showed everyone the way horne In the 250cc Ama te ur- Expe r t go, s moolhing out all the r ough stu!!, an d going so fast that you can't beli eve It. Larr y La ws on, #15, was second on a Husky , an d Bob Rodine, #17x, was third. The first Amateur in was Bob Kulak, #37x. The 350cc, 500cc, and Open Novices were up next. Stan Lowrey, #28P on a Triumph took the Ope n Class; Lanny Lehigh, #213 on a Husky, took the 500cc class, and Ed Houtz, #443 on a Bultaco, took the 350cc class . The last race of the day on the Vlcinrs cours e was the Combined 500cc and Open Ama teur-Exper t go. Big smoke bom b John Gaetz, #39, took the le.ad again, as onl y he can do: full on, watch out ; and clear the cour ser Unfortunately , Gaetz got a flat tire and had 10 pull In on the second lap . Mike Patrick also had trouble a nd pulled In, as cUd J,N. Roberts. Ron Fry took over the lead on his Husky, and held It to the finish. Tim Smith, #069 on a Montesa was second. Torn Maxwell, #54 on a Norton, was third and first Open Expert. Doyle Fields, #22, took fourth on a new Bultaco; not bad for the first time out on that bike. Lynn Fortner, #506 on a Husky, was the first 500cc Amateur . Lynn has been putting It to them lately! Dave Brewer, #46 on a Triumph, was again the first Open Amateur In, and Is one of the top Open Amateurs in the desert. Rams Route The Rams course was only about four miles around. so they made more laps in Amale ur In on the Husky, and Harold Mortensen, #55, was the first Open Ama teur. The Novice Trail Bikes were up next, and again Wayne Garrett, #129 on a He- , - '~ For de sert ra cing take a pack. daka, was the winner , with Wayne Ragland, #515, In second, and LarrySovern, #247, in third. All en Wuetzel, #612, carne In fourth. Jack Morgan, #1, made It two wins for the day In the Trail Bike AmateurExpert go, with Eric Jensen, #7, filling the second spot. W,C . Stanfill, #62, was the first Amateur In. Earl Penny, #134x, also had a very good day, to make It two 250cc Novice wins for the day . Dave Lepera, #240x, was second , and Gary Weslergaard, #641x , was third. The 250cc Amateur-Expert was the last race of the day. Bergquist, #888x, grabbed the lead an d built It up, but had to drop out. The courses were a mile apart, making It dillicult to see everything at one time, so we can only hlghllght the incUvidual race s. The first race of the day on the Victors course was for the Novice Trail Bikes ; there were over a hundred of them, an d they made quite a cloud nf dus t . BY mistake, a new Open Class r ider got turned around backwards on the course and was going up the s teep hill where everyone was stancUng to watch the race. At the same time, the leader carne over the hill and had to ball oulto miss him. He wasn't hurt badly, but was understandably mad at losing hi s chance to win . The winner of the three-lap event on the eight- mile course was Wayne Garrett. #129 on a Hodaka, bolcUng a good lead over second man Randy DeVine , #161. Dwight Furnish, #106 on a Honda was third. the forty-five m inute races. The first race up was the 500 and Open Novices, which was won by Al Nunnally, #176 ona Triumph, who held a good lead over second man Nick Gula, #730. The next r ace was the Combined 500cc and Open Amateur-Expert. Jerry PerIdns, #25 on a Triumph, grabbed the le ad and beld In ther e for three loops , looldng like he wa:s going to take It, but the n had to drop out when he los t his chain. J .N. Robe rts. #2. took over the lead at that point, and held It to the finish. Steve Staats, #95, was second on a Bul taco, and . Tim Smith, #069, was thi rd. Doyle F ie lds, #22 , again took fourth on the-new Bultaeo. Lynn Fortner, #506, was again the First Oops! and held It to the fin is h. Glen Thomas, #15x, was second, and Ray Johnson, #62x, was third. The Bene fit event was a big succes s. with over three hundred riders signing up on both sides. The Rescue #3 Team cUd another good job, and we all hope tha t they will keep corning out to help the riders when In need.
