CYCLELAND SHORT TRACK A SMOOTHIE story and Photos by Dale McKi nnon With the start of the racing season I've found myself back in the old grind of covering races . Several new tracks have opened up, but on a recent Saturday I traveled to Cycleland up near Chico, Calif. It is one of the better Short Tracks in the Northern Area; Its surface is out of this world and they keep it in perfect shape. Di ck took both the 200 Scratch and Handicap Mains but not until after a valiant effor t put forth by Mi ke . Dick also received a trophy for having the largest handicap for the year, l1, nice reward and well de_ served. . Sacramento kind of i nvaded Chico in the 250 Class, as Ray Vainey on a super fast H-D l ed from start to finish in the 250 Scratch lIIain. All i n all a good time was had by spectators as well as riders . The way the events are run there Is no delay between races and everything goes off smoothly. They have more kinds of races than you can shake a stick at: there are Begi nners - that' s f or the r iders who have never raced there before and who haven 't won there yet. How great it would be to have another World Champi on in one of A mer i ca 's bi ggest and fastest growing sports. in Europe the boys ride JA P's or Esos , which are the most popular. Here they will be racing the JAP's and Esos again, as well as the other makes of motorcycles that are compe titive, like the new 350 and 360's . Speedway raci ng is team racing. The teams instill more spirit, enthusiasm, excitement and color. I nstea d of only being able to cheer f or one racer at a time riding in possibly three races, you can cheer for team of four riders and watch each man ride several heats, competing against all oth er team members. The heats are usually a fast four laps, wi th the racer s sideways all the way around, but always in control. It is almost unbelieveable. At the end of the heats the riders wi th the most points go , to the Main Event and the team at the end of the Main that has the most points wins the meet. Since prize money is also pald according to points, yo u can see why competition will be so close. So stand by to see and participate in something old, but brand new in motorcycle racing. (See Calendar of Events .) a Th e last and what they consider the Maln Event i s the Handicaps, where Novices, Amateurs and E xper ts all ride at th e same time wi th differ ent handicaps and they add to it every time you win.
