Lacey Forced to fight his way through heat race and semi, Portland'S T.L. Haglan copped the Sidewinders M.C. night TT opener May 17 with a wlre-to-wire storm that left even the stoutest man and beast weak at heart. This was T.L.'s first 1st place at the 'Winders after trying weekly for years, but it didn't come easy as Mark WUliams, 4Q, and Bob Fuller, 38w, gave a good chase, though Fuller dropped back as the laps wore on. But Williams, Trlumphmounted as was Fuller, got alongside Haglan's Norton twice in the up-hill sweeper, and the crowd just went wild! T .L . had the fast inside groove, though, and Willi ams trailed home a scant four feet behind. 'Twas sort of a night of upsets in that no Trophy Lash winner repeated with any win other than a heat race. Bill Cook won the Novice dash going away and rode a good A Main but not as good as Len Miller, Honda, who won wire to wire, or D. Sheffel's brother Charlie, who by an act of God got under Cook somehow on the last turn to grab second. Amateur winner Jim Gale, Triumph, came back from a poor showing in the Lash to show to all he can wail with the best of ' e m, while Lance Morgeson, Lash winner, trailed home third. Da.ve Shefre1 rode to a steady second. The Expert B Main was also a real go In that Dick Jagow had been trying all night to do the other Experts in with his 360 Greeves, but only managed the B Main. Not Mr. Jagow's fault, just not enough ponies in the iwo-stroke. Merlin Thompson grabbed a healthy lead at the start, Jagow a fourth, but soon was second after the flying Thompson. Down of~ the h111 Dick would ny, compression release the only loud sound save for the cries of the crowd when the West beer stand went dry, but there weren't enough laps and the Shark, Thompson, went on for the win. Seems to have proved one thing: a 2-stroke can hacl< it here but damned If I think one can win in A Expert Main. With Jag ow looking for a big-bore 4-stroke r ide I'd think one of the local dealers hereabouts would come acros s, and soon! With track drying problems, a closing curfew, and one small needless delay, the Oregon Sidewinders did a right good job of gettlng the nights' program run of( In an orderly manner. With the opening night jitters now gone we should see some real pr ofes s ional organization out there and racing a ction to be enjoyed by all.
