But, the Main was n't quite the "cup of tea" that It has pr evi ous ly been as Jimmy Raymond on his Honda was abl e to stay right on Paul's rear wheel for the last hal! of the race. Even though Paul was able to hold off J im my' s bid for the win, you can bet that Raym ond will be out ther e next week to try an d break Pau l' s win streak. Third and fo urth place In the 100Cc Maln went to Bryan Spinks on his Yam aha and Chuc k Saxton on a Honda . or 353-3226. POLITICAL UPHEAVAL AT_DIXON Story by P a t ti e Prestid ge Now that all' s quiet (te mpor arily ) In the Southla.nd, Nor the rn California has begun to erupt. 1bat opening outdoo r s hort tr ack of the ' 68 season, held at Dixon Fairgrounds on May 12, brought out all kinds of problems for riders and offi cials . First off, Lance Prestidge tur ne d In his s triped shir t for the year . As man y of you know, he ha d tak en ove r the job as Referee in December of '6 7. So with a firs t-year Assistant Referee to hea d the Dis trict 36 officials, the AMA had to call on Dis trict 35'S Hank Gendusa to give the As s' t. Ref . a hand. Gen dusa not onl y came with hi s r ulebook but with a big, bad letter from the AMA about compres sion r eleases! Seems when the r ide r s had already signed In, they were then told they 'd hav e to disconn ec t the ir compr ession releases and scr ub brake s. Well, a t tha t ti me I know we all wis hed the r acers' friend, the MRI, was cl os er . But the r iders got togethe r for an impromptu meeting and dec ided they would not ride. Finaliy, the grands tan ds were mling up and time was r acing on•. •but not the racer s. So Mr . Referee then decided to let the m r ace WITH compression releases. The track, I! you can picture this, is a baby Tulare without the dust. Pass ing was done s trictly on the outside and In s lip s tr ea m style . In the Novice Maln Event, Honda- mounted Ni c k Theroux turned back Jay Kanem oto (Bultaco) and Harry Dring (SUZUki), while the Amateur/ Expe rt Maln went to Mike Yarn (B ultaco) ahead of Paul Bostrom (Honda ) and Chal DeCecco (Suzuki) . (R es ul ts on pag e 16) Stumpenhaus Sai l s Lee Stum penhaus, who had miss e d last wee k's go-around, came out to make the 250Cc class look like a repeat of the lOOcc class as he won his heat, the Trophy Dash and the Main Eve nt. But, Uke Pa ul,lt wasn 'tas ea sy as it s ounde d. In the Trophy Dash , It was Lee getting his usual good s tart off the li ne, while Carroll Skov did a real s mcoth wheelleas the adhea s lon was ter r ltic on the track. In the Main, Lee again jumped Into the lead, an d it you have ever seen this man in the lead, you know how hard It Is to ge t around him. Or I! you don't know, ask Ran dy Ellis, as he followed him for 10 Iaps trying to tlnd away , but had to s ettle for second plac e . Third place went to Carroll Skov who tried to put his Bultaco around the cou r se the same way Lee' s Bultaco went around, but he had to settle for a position behind Rand y's Honda . Heme mbe r, the South Gate track Is r unning motorcycles twice a week, with short track on Wednes day, an d TT ' s r unning on Thu rsday . Watch th e Calendar of Events fo r the big 50-la.p TT race to be held the night of May 30, whi ch Is Memorial [)iy. This will be a 50-la.p Main Event for both the lOOcc and 250cc classes. Ba r t Is headed In the win department by Joe Leonard (now racing cars ) with 27 National wins . Bart fend ed off the smooth , str ong e fforts of Southern Califor nia's own H- D. champ [)in Haaby . The real surpr ise of the meet was the 5th place of Cal Ra yborn (H- D) and this Is his best dirt s howing ye t. If Cal can come in on the di rt track scene a little s tronger he'll have a good chance of ge ttlng tha t pr ec ious number one . Dave Atherton really put It to ' em in the Richmond Amateur final fo r the be s t ride of hi s professional car eer aboard his trusty Harley. The national point standings s how Cal Rayborn le ading with Gary Nixon, Gene Romero, J im Odom and " Bad Bart" Markel following suit, Per s onally,I think tha t Ma r kel mi ght co me through by the end of the year to cop the big one for him self again. Gen e Rom ero will fall back a ways an d Nixo n will be s ti ll up ther e In the top three . Jim Odom will als o !a1l back a ways with some of the other Harley riders getting In there for the co nte ntion. As far as the Sportsman AMA rac ing is concerned, Southe r n Calt!or nia' s ac e deser t rider Ge.ry Conr ad (now r iding · SUZuki) evidentl y got a IItile pisse d ott about his r a ther dismal showing s In the Moto-Cross races he has been competing In lately an d decided to sh ow the boys how It' s done. Gary snatched fir s t place brass In the AFM Ca r lsbad profe s s i onal moto -cross held ther e on May 19. Another r ider In the scene these days is Amateur r ider Lynn Fo rtoer who looks like he may be another numbe r -one likely In the des ert In the next year' s outngs , Ly nn has a good number of top sh owings to his cr e dit already. One of the rather outstanding showings at Ascot Park In Gardena thi s year has been the efforts of one BSA r ider De evident to all that Ed had plenty of frie nds to help In the almost Impos sible job of clea nup. r Wayne Keeter . DeWayne has ta ken s everal seco nds In the Big " A" Main Events already and [ project that it's jus t a ;; matter of time before he takes a bi g one. Pat Gos ch also came In with a surprise '" win a t the San Jose half-mile track In Ii both the Main Event and the Trophy [)ish. Eve r-powerful Keith Mas hburn has a dded another Novice win to his many as the Yamaha-moun ted stormer seems to be uns toppable . S Ed Kretz, Monterey Park - Bums Down! This new build ing will be rushed Into ser vi ce to keep up the service requirements that t he Kretz fa cility has so f3..lth!ully held through the years . Ed plan s on a tire sale sometime th is week and it might not be a bad Idea to con tact his co-horts and check th e date . I might also menti on that there Is a good fir s t year Amateur rider by the name of Lee Wheeler ' and he' s looki ng for a ride for the season. Lee was by fa r the hardes t- chargi ng Novice Iast year when It came to diving into t he many times treacherous As co t half- m il e surfa ce . Alth ough his machine was underpowe red compa r ed to the Japanese twins , his little s ingl e got Into the Novice mains more often than man y other singles combined for the s eason . Expert Tim Harris is also sea rc hi ng for a good ride . If you 're looking to a r ider for thi s season con tact me In the Ascot pits any Fr iday night (blue Cyc le News jac ket). 00 <0 .... 0") The Scr ambles Cl ubs Referees' MeetIng didn't produce an y actual rule chang e s but there ... as a lot of ver y good disr cusslon on how we can throw our events more eff[c[e ntly, and how to Improve the scrambles scene In gener al. Steve Cham be r s , the Vie wfinders Referee, suggested that as so muc h time Is always spent on track maintenance, shortening the a ctual r iding time for r ider s , tha t all our local tracks sh ould go to the Class "c" traction only. Right now we don't hav e a track which demands the use of knobble s just to s tay upright on It and they s ur e tear up the surface fast however much maintenance Is done on It. This Is a poin t that really bears thinking about, although even Steve fig ur ed he' d get s ta tic on that s uggestion from the guys who just have to r un knobbles everywhere they can! The club membership problem came up an d was thoroughly discussed with several s uggestions being mad e to stop the current situation where you are actually pe nalize d by belonging to a District c lub while the fac t remains that the Distric t IS the me mbe r clubs . They do all the work. One of the best s uggestions we fe el Is th e one from the Sportsmens ' Lyman Ham . He s uggested that the ear ned number pla.tes be gi ven only to rider s who belo ng an d wor k for a District club . Other r iders can ride as many s crambles as they wis h but would r ec eive a pie plate numbe r for that day only each time they r id e. Other Ideas wer e to pay a perce ntage of points to each club member on the da ys he ca n' t r ide while helpi ng throw a s c r am bles or pe rhaps allowing anyone In the top te n point standings to ride his own club event. This gets a little discrlmlnalory beca us e most of us want a lower number each year but these are still only s uggestions, not proposed rul e chan ges . It would be nice to see the clubs buil d up In numbe r s and to see those numbe r one plate s bei ng carried by men who belong to a District club. We haven't had a club member in ei ther Division as a number one for more than a couple of years now. Some used to belong but qui t because they just couldn't afford to lose a co uple of da ys' points. Tain't fair and although this has co me up on the floor of the Sports Commltiee several ti mes ove r the years nothing has ever gone past the talking stage, so this time let's all ge t together and do something about It. It was also sugges ted tha t for the next few scrambles, clubs let It be known it they had any problems that could have been ironed out fa s t I! known about ah ead of ti me, or it they found something that co uld perhaps help out another club to stage a good event. Te ch Inspection was kicked around a whil e and we'd like to r eport now that the Powder Puff As socta tion found their system wa r ked extremely well. Rider s brought the ir bikes to the Inspection area, were checked an d I! legal r ec eived a stamp on the number plate and the entry bla.nk at the sam e time. This s topped an yone from fil ling out a blank ahead of time only to find out hi s machine was unacceptable , an d the line at the s ign-up booth didn 't jam up as badly. I! an ything had to be fixed , su ch as a kic k- stand removed or a pe g covered, It had to be 10ne before you got your han ds on an entry blank, an d s tarte r s and line chec kers kept their eyes open too, In case anyone tried to pull a s neaky. Anothe r Idea was that the District hol d' a school for starte r s to ge t some co nforml ty Into s tarts, and to teach the technique of ge tting ' e m off the Une fasi and fairly. We 'll drink to that! If an y club has any Ideas or s ugges tions that sh ould be discussed more widely and ge tti ng It In print can help, let us know. Letters to Cyc le News will reach me and the home base address Is on the bottom of the monthiy Dis trict minutes . The next r un Is the Viewfinders Grand Prix coming up this weekend and ever yone Is at the wonde r- what- the- cour seIs- and-wnat -geartne-do-t-use s t a g e , We've been told " [t' s easier thanCorrlganvllle ." If It Is n' t someone's goi ng to be hit on the head with a spanner! We 've also been told, " Wow, that cour s e is a @#~ • •" We'll all fin d out this wee kend who Is r ight.
