,i I f • . \ .. • .. - , . ' -'- - ... ~ Leaping along at Marysville, Carl Crank. (2) and 250 wlnn.r Carl Lelr (19) Slory and Pholo s by Dale McKinnon Long Gone From the looks of things Marysville, Ca ltf , may have hit the jackpot. Cy Roberts, midget and hardtop race promater , has developed an inter es t in motorcycle races. He built a new track for the bikes to run on and what a dandy ! It is fast, smooth an d has adequate gr ands tan d and can c e s s io n s • Robe r ts really knew what he was doi ng. He had pl enty of help from the Feather River Motorcycle Club, and especially Slim'S BSA shop in Marysvllle like BllI Krlll brothers Vic and Alvin and their mother Ron Long dr oppe d the heat to none other than Debbie Ja ckli ne , one of our leading fe male racers and almost did a repeat in the Main . Joe All en after taking a win at Chico Saturday night just couldn' t ge t underway even though he and Pa ul Minor battled for third pr e tty hard. Debbie was on Ron's tail all the way, she really r ode a good race. Nobody, an d I mean nobody beats Ron when the chips are down, in the 100 Ama teur Class . Vic Krlll took the 200 Novice Main but not unti l a real battle from Gary Welsh. Gary almost had him s ever al times a nd rode peg to pe g with him, but he fell an d gave Vic an easy win• Ernis Lussier took an easy win in the 250 Novice Main . Dan Erickso n did n' t have it so ea sy with his second place, a s Duane sardin want ed i t prett y bad him self. They rode nip and tuck the whol e r ace for a pretty good battle. The first r estart of the day was in the 250 Amateur- Expert Main. Ca r l Cr a nke too k a quick lead in th e fi rs t tr y, but Mike Ellls gr a bbed it in the second. Ca r l Li er and Cr a nke wer e dicing all the way. Finally Lier took the lead with Cranke sara. . • The 100's led off a s usual with John Ghant leading the pack off the line in both the heat and Ma in, with Spa r ky P inola a s oli d second. In the Main try as he may John couldn't shake off Larry Smith. At one time it was a three-way go- Sparky, J ohn an d Larry. John Harris came up an d took the lead m om e n t a r ily but dropped back. Spa r ky was in there all the way and took a fourth, best he has done in a long ti me. John after qulte a few wins had to s e ttle for second after fighting Larry the whole race . For onc e it was n' t a runaway for the winner. Di ving underneath at this poi nt I s Yamaha-mounted Mike Ellis (17 ). r ight behind. It was a three-way go, then developed i nto a do or die battle for second be twee n Cr an ke and Ellls. They really mi xed it up as only their class ca n do. Cr an ke and Wllliam Walch took a splll In the lead, Lier was down also in the mos t s pectacular spill I've seen in a long time . It seems he did an endo coming off the jump, he and bike fiipped s everal tim es an d it really looked ba d. But he got up finished the race and went on to ta ke the Mai n. Goes to s how you can 't keep a good ma n down. In the 350 go it was Monty Gibs on all the way in the heat until the Iastlap when he los t the lea d. In the Main he sat ba ck and took It easy.o r so I thought. He tried to move up but it seems he blew a hole in one of his pi stons and they don' t run too good tha t way, Actually it was Joe Brazil all the way a s he rode a flaw les s race start to finish he even coa s ted the last few laps . In the 500- 650 Novice Willia m Ba ttagun took over when the early leader went down . All William was waiti ng for was a mista ke a nd it happened. Schyder Ckchaff (l think) an d BlIl Evans played ga me s for a while but Bill wasn't quite up to the task of ge tting by him . Lotsa Leaders In the 500-650 Ama te ur - Exper t go it was Rich a r d Stei nne off the line first only to fall an d let Art Rine tt take over. But he di dn' t reckon on Woodie Com mander and Denni s Dickerson. Seve r al laps later after r iding whee l with Woodie Dennis move d up an d fought Ar t for the lead and won out . Then up co me s Ray Holt to pa ss and beat them all. He r eally rode a beau tif ul rac e; they all did, it was close all the way. The Ride r s put on a spec tacul a r riding disp lay , the spectators loved every minute of It, a nd the ambulance did n' t move once. Le n Allen was present for their first r a ce and was pretty well impressed wit h the track and how thing s were run. The Feathe r River M.C. put on the r a ce and the way they ran it they want the r ider s all to co me back. There will be a benefit race May 25, satu rd ay , for one of the r iders who got hurt sever a l we eks ago, Skip Hurdleman.
