Worst of all - especially for Cyc le News the club statistician was ove rwhelmed by the Immense number of riders and co ul d not Immediately provide complete resuits. So If there are mistakes this week, please bear with us . The HMC says they'll hav e things strail?:htened out soon. IT anyone still doubts the popular! ty of s por ts man 1'1' racing, he should ha ve been at the Hayward (Cal1!.) Speedway on Sa tu r da y night, May 4 . An ove rwhe l m ing c rowd of 437 r ider s and a ppr oximately 1200 spectators turned out for the opening ev ent of the Hayward Motorcycle Club's weekiy races, he~d every Saturday night through the summer. Dring Does His Thing • BSA rider Harry Dring turned in the performance of the night by winn ing both the heat . and Maln Event of the Open E xpe r t class. In the heat Harr y drew a bad start but came up from fourth place to take the lead halfway through the race • He was for c ed to do the same thing all over again in the Main when Rod Norgard an d T lf Muilenax go t out in fr ont of him and we r e not about to gi ve up their positions wi tho ut a battl e . But Harry got by both of the m in beautifully controlled slides to take the win . Thi s Is the first ti me that Dr in g, who Is only 18, has had a 650cc of his own to ride, and if he can keep up the pace he set Saturday night he will gi ve the top 650 Expe rts in Dis trict 36 s o mething to worry about. Allan Kenyon pus hed his Bultaco 360 to vi ctor y In the 500 Expe r t class which, at Hayward , has always been the p r ov ince of th e 30.50 Trium phs and BSAs. Paul John son, als o r idi ng an El Bandido, did his best to make It a 1-2 fi nish fo r the two-strokes, but Ron Enos an d his BSA Victor wouldn 't cooperate. J ohnson hung on Enos ' rear fender fo r th e entire race but the popper couldn't be mov ed out of second place . Tho s e two made qui te a r ace of It , but Kenyon motored aroun d for the win without being ser ious ly challenged. Th e Wyme r brothers , Rich and Wlll1s, continued their winnin g s treak by r iding their BSAs to victory in the 500 Ama te ur and 350 Nov ic e clas s es . !HTEHslfl~J HODAKAS by Mi ke Robinson (6l v) winner of the 200 Amateur cla ss about to pass an early l eader over the Hayward jump. the 200 Amateur and Derek Olsen In the 100 Novice . Overwhelming Attendance The crush of r iders and spectators s ev erely ta xed the Hayward M.C. facili ti es. Sign -up took place from 4 to s p .m , but competitors arriving after the first hour or so found no r oom to park In the pits an d were forced to wheel their ma chines In from ou tside parking lots . A wai t of 45 minutes fo r three p r ac tice laps v ~e no t unusual. Othe r c a tas trophes, seen a s a s hor tage of hot dogs and All this cannot, of course, be blamed on the Hayward me mbers . They did their a bol ute best to cope wit h what was an al most Im possible s it uation. Th ose Inclined to co mplai n a bo ut the Inconve ni ences should r e me mber that Haywa rd usually draws only half that many riders and spectators . But unless the HMC ge ts a lot more members and larger fa cilities, they will have to encourage another club to s tar t Saturday night ractng. Their track is jus t too popular.
