The smell or hor s es and hay was dis tinc t as the fi r st of 59 r iders pulled Into
the Hor s eman' s arena In Fallon, Nevada .
But as more motorcycles arrived, the
air was rilled with the s mell or cycle
exhaust and the so und or speedlng bikes ,
as horses watched rrom Ins ide their
corrals.
There was some objection raised when
the oasis Scramblers M.C. or Fallon
planned the scrambles. Some or the local
horsemen dldn't ,,-ant their horse track
used ror a cycle race. Arter this was
solved, another problem was added when
some prankster turned on the water In
the arena on the saturday berore the race .

The open valve was discovered at 11
p.m, on saturday night . and several cl ub
members spent most or the night drainIng orf the water ror the next day's race
on Sunday, Apr il 28.
On Sunday morning the track was
usable , and by r ace time at I p.m olt was
In good shape. Although about half or the
area Inside the track was muddy water,
only two riders ended up In the mud
during the day.
In the l OOcc class , all eyes were on
Alex Jorgenson or Stockton, Call!. on a
Kawasaki and Barkeley Trehal or Reno,
Nevada on a Bullaeo . They separated
themselves rr om the rest or the pack and
rought It out ror first place ror the entire
heat. Jorgenson: 13 years old, looks like
he has trouble reaching Ihe handlebars,
but as young and small as he Is, he really
knows how to handle a bike . The crowd
stood and chee red as he took first plac e
In a tight finis h.
Motorcycle racing left Its Impr ession
on the people or Fallon o One or the local
spectators who had rrequented the arena
said " This s ure beats any horse race
I've seen" _
It looks promising ror mor e races In
the ruture . It also helped that the Fallon
club took extra care to leave the area
clean.
Although the club ran Into pr oblems
and obstacles to make this r ace come
otr, It demons trated to so me ske ptical
hometown rolks that motor cycle races
are run, exciting 00. and or ganlzedo
