The 7Q-mile ~ route took the riders east to Harbor c.J Blvd., then south to Hwy . 101 In Newport =<: Beach, then north on Hwy : 39 back 10 c.J the park. cj By 10:00 a.m.; the parking lot was :-. filled with bikes, and the riders were U competi ng for trophies . Firs t they tur ned in their s tam ped route shee ts and drew a poker hand. Then they tried their luck at games of chance, testing thei r ski ll a t tossing a baseball Into the mouth of a milk can, and tossing rings at hooks on a board. TIlen ca me lunch, a deli cious cornbtnation of ham and beans , cole slaw, and corn bread. A wild contes tfollowed chow. Contes tants wer e Issued two lemons , one In the toe of a nylon stocking. The object of the game was to hold the stoc kIng behind your back, and by s winging the le mon In the stocking between your legs , bat the other lemon acr os s the finish line. The fun and games were followed by trophy presentations. Over 90 trophies and gUt certificate s were awarded, nearly one award for every two r iders. Some clubs present r uns to make money, but DALE BlOWN MOTOICYCLES - the Rockets' only objective was to show the cr owd a good ti me, and that they did. You never saw a gr oup have more funas the tro phies wer e awarded amid a barrage of good- natur ed wis ecracks , and howls of la ughter . By 4:00 p.m.. the gold was won and the happy r iders were on their way home. May riders were surprised that they didn't have to show their AMA cards when they signed up for the r un. Thls was because the run was sanctioned by a new organization, the Southern California Motorcycling Association. The President Is Dale Stoddard (also pr esid ent of the Nor walk Rockets). Vice President Is Elll s Smith, and Ji m Keck is Ir easurer. TIle SCMA doesn't intend to conflict with the RRC or the AMA , and stands r eady to co- oper ate with them at any time. Among the objec tives of the SCMA are to get more people out for weekend r uns. Including outriders as well as the clubs , car dr ivers who are Inter es ted In motor cycles, family gr oups , s mall bike riders, and to pr es ent motor cycll ng to the public as good clean fun. Although the SCMA Is only 4 months old, It already has over 100 members. As well as outriders. member clubs Include the Norwalk Rockets , o ve r iander s , Fr eight Jockeys , Ar tes la Pioneers, and the Tam pa Road Runners .
