This year's starting poin t was the Izaac Walton League Cabin near Shelby, Indiana. .... -~ The event, which in the past has been plagued with raln, was unusally dry on May 5. As one ot the r iders commented, " It wasn 't much ot a weight lUting contest this year." However, with the terraln o( northern Indiana, one mows an enduro r ider doesn't do much si lthtseeing. The sponsors o( the eve nt, the Midwesl Enduro Riders Association, !lnd a wonderful variety or goodies (or the enduro-loving r ider to endure . The sand seems sandier, the water seems wetter, the mud seems muddier and the woods seem woodier . However the association did, as always, choose some ha r d r oads as well for the r iders to maintain this year's 24 miles per hour average. All the top names in the enduro world wer e on han d as well as the us ual gro up o( hardy newcomer s . Enduro KJng Bill Baird did it again, bec oming the only High Point Champion since the 175-Mile was started in 1964 in Nor ther n Indiana. Baird gave up only 50 points, winding up with a s core or 950. The high point A Class Champion, Ray Kussmaul ot Lansing, Mich., also ' did a !lne job and turned in a s core ot 942. Monte Montoya, " the tat manwhotalls down a lot, " stayed up to take a close second to BllI Dickie, the loca1 mountain shoe, in a hotly-contested co mbined 200-250cc Novice class. Both rode BuI's. Three-Man Show Only three riders in the 250cc Amateur/ Exper t class signed up, but on the 5/S-mile track with lots of lefts and rights, plus a mountain s ide , they were well matched and it was "nup and tick" all the way. Despite digging a piece of iron out of the track with his big toe, Jay Willey (Monte sa) managed to wtn over Greeves r ider s Steve Rinker and lo cal r eferee Shane Ross . A 360Cc Bultaco ridden by IlBn Harnett and a 360cc Montesa with a muchimproved Rick Miller aboard s corched the terra-slippery with three fast heats. Miller did a (unny In the s econd heat but only hurt his pride and throttle. Following in the 360 Expert class were Jim Lovelady (Honda ) and Red Van Burklrk (CZ) . The 500Cc Novice /Amateur wound up a three-way tie for tlrst, so a 3-iap heat was run to de cide the winner. Clil ifom il 90000I Hatcher Helps Always a crowd-pleaser, Chuck ltatcher (riding his Triumph "The Bounty Hunter") was matched with Novice and Amateur ride r s in the Open go. Handily wtnnlng the !l r s t heat, Hatcher decided to give the other r iders a br eak in the sec ond. As they lined up, someone held Chuck's steed while he took the starter's nag, waved them off, ran bac k, s ta r te d his bike and took ott. He ca ught them on lap two and by lap three was in rront, For the third heat ltatcher started a halt-lap behind, but Gary Smith (Triumph), Mark DuBois (Tr iumph) and Ron Echot! ( Bultaeo) wer e determined not to be caught. Eventually they were, though Hatcher ad mitted he had a helluva time catching them.
