We know it was the !lrst time in
District 37 and from what we have heard
it could be the fir s t time anywhere that

clubs who have huge memberships and
some who have fa mous nam es in the
District the Po wder Puffers feel lhey
have earned their laurels by throwing
the ir Perris run and contributing something to the sport officially . There were
s ome goofs, but it wasn't a bom b.
Two days before the run all airports
were watched to see that no one s neaked
out of town; husbands didn' t dare say a

heard saying In a disbelieving tone to a
buddy "Did you see what they did to me ?
I had
start fa cing backwardsl" He still
!l nis hed well despite all thi s.
The lightweight events were run off in
gr ea t style, everyone gett ing plenty of
r iding and the 250'.5 running the big
co ur se. Track surface was glorious . It
had r ained the night before and although
it got cold enough to do embarrassing
things to brass monkeys when yo u had to
stand around all day long, the s urfa ce
remaine d in top s hape because it never
got hot.
Then big bi ke practice where lhe
Novic e s ha d to wait until the Ama teur Expe rt briga de were through. " Why
can' t we all practice together?" " be cause you' re a Novice." " But I want to
r ide with the Experts ." "Then make
Amate ur and you will ," e tc . , etc . But
no one got mad. They just wonder ed why
but we re member when the Novices were
always le ft comple te ly until las t and
didn ' t even get practice until af ter the
Open Expert Main l
And then •••the one big goof ••.Amateurs
and Exper ts were listed together on the
heat boards and the Association had to
change all this, a s Ama teurs run with
Ama teu r s , Expe rts with Expe rts, e tc .
Didn' t take long but it made for some
nervous racer s who were all antsy on lhe
line and another ulcer for Ihe already
seared stiff s tarter . Have you ever faced
a bunch of gi mlet- eyed big bore riders
who are all glar ing at you? Ylpe!
We've done our share of bi tching and
complaining and simply just poking fun at
starters In our years of writing a
scrambles column and racing and will
continue to do so. Maybe that's why we
didn 't completely blow our cool but we
darn nea r did on lhat fi rst r ace, the 500
Expert. To anyone who Is familia r with
the boys who r ide that class •••·nuff said!
There were they, men who are friends
and dear a cquaintances and poi nt- happy
to boot, an d lhere were we de te r mi ned
they wer en't going to jump that line.
Would you beli eve three black !lagS?
It' s truel
John Ric e , Tony Denius and Ray Nichols all ended on the back line . John R.
was the first to go ( John , don 't try and
tell us your clutch Is dragging, ha ha l)
Tony was next and then Ray. Arter the
third black !lag there was only one thing
to do to the little boys and that was make
them start with their hand on the ir helmets so they couldn' t get lhe lr Itchy
!Ingers on the clutch lever. Worked tool
, Would you believe we didn 't have any
more trouble for the next !Ive heats? But,
if It hadn 't been for Committeeman Dick
Kouns we would have just about jumped
in the truck and driven a way and let them
have the darn track! He kept saying
" You' r e the boss. Nowmake them believe
It and don't let ' em get away with It." It
looked like all the spectators at Perris
had gathered to watch that start because
they all had an Inkli ng of what would
happen and It did, but they cheer ed us
on, especially after the third black !lag.
To the m we say " Thanks for the backing
we got ove r the fence." Yeah , we got
some other comments too but that's part
of the game and we can give as good as
we ge t, but to the people who supported
the s tand for a fair s tart, two of the boys
who jumped admitt ed ' with grins afterwards that they had planned It that way
and just wanted to see how far we co uld
be pushed. Unfortuna tely lhey cost another r ider a fried clu tch but then there 's
neve r an excuse for a fried clutch on the
starting IIne..,ls Ihere?
The Ope n Class, especi ally the NovIces, wer e all r un off with no troubles
and our best start of lhe day came fr om
lhe 500 Novices who were requested to
"be gen tl emen" a nd a mor e perfect li ne
- off the s tart you never saw In your lifel
Male helpe rs were awarde d " The
Royal Order of lhe La dies Garter " which
they all wor e proudly and by the end of
the day you weren' t " In" It you didn' t
have a garte r . The As sociation is making
arrangements to s ee that all who helped
and didn't receive garters wlll get one,
we just plain ran out. There Is another
award we are considering "Sour Lemon
of lhe Day" to the Expert who threw a
temper tantrum on the li ne when he was
ordered ba ck. Maybe we should Incl ude
a bar of soap to wa s h his mouth out after
all those super nasty words he said. That
was the only real unpleasantness expe r ienced all day and to all the gentl emen,
(bar one) of District 37, we salute you.
Allhough we stepped tnto your world and
worked for lhe sport of motorcycling you
didn 't forget we were ladies, and tha t
takes class. We even got to screeching
ourselves once in a while and know how
it feels wben a race doesn't go wen.
Will we do It next year? Well
.
