Val Howard and his lOOcc Yamaha twin jumped into the lead and stayed, un- challenged, for the entire six laps. Back In the pack, Don Dierking (5OCc Honda) and Roy Nakamoto (lOOCc Yamaha) were dicing enthusiastically, and didn't even seem to mind when Roger Baeder passed them to move into second overall and second 100Cc on his Kawasaki. Dierking !in1shed as rtrst 50cc, Ton Nicosia gained second 50Cc on his Suzuki production racer. Third "50" was 0U1 Osborne (Ital- jet), and third 100Cc was the persistent Nakamoto. second Maln Event was the combined l25 -l75cc race . DaveAllee, l75cc Honda mounted, seemed to have the class win and overall In the bag, until the last lap. Reg Pridmore (l25cc Bultaco) had been slowly catching the leader, alter struggling past Steve McLaughlin. On the last corner, Allee's usually reliable mount had a case of gearbox gremlins and Pridmore passed him to take the overall win as well as the l25cc class. McLaughlin was second 125 and Mike Velasco second 175. short lightweight production feature was next, with 175 class victor John Plnaglla (Honda) the overall winner as well. First 200 was Steve Galbraith (Bultaco), 125 winner was Steve Froschauer and !irst 50 and 100 were Chuck Clay don ( S u z u k I) and Mike Velasco (Bridges tone) respectively. oA Two-Fifty Tussle Another upset occurred in the 25OCc. Heat race winner JodY Nicholas (Yamalili) had as good a chance as any, with Ron Grant (Suzuki) and Ralph Vlhite (Kawasaki) carrying the colors for their respective teams. Ron Pierce and Buddy Parriott were backing up the Yamaha cause, so things lookedgood•••unillearly leader Nicholas took a black !lag for a dangling pipe . Thl~ let Grant into t4e lead followed by White. Tooth and nail went these two, drawing away from the r es t of the troops, and putting on a spectacular show for the fans . in the end, White took the race and the win for Kawasaki . Grant nailed second and Pierce was a semi-distant third. Following this was an anticlimactic heavyweight production event. Jon Graber did raise some eyebrows, and puncture some egos, by sneaking In !irst on a 250cc Bultaco. First 350 was Jerry Greene, a consistent winner , and first 1000cc (Open) was Hugh McLean, returning to the battles with his HarleyDavidson Sportster• ..' ~ Abo...: Faillei' and son - Jolin and Steve Me Lauilllln. Well, as soon as the AFM !lag was dropped by starter Jim Manning, there were White and Grant at It again, this . time on d1!!erent mounts. Grant rode a 500cc Suzuki and White was aboard another Kawasaki, running In "the 350Cc . class. They were joined by 350CcBrldgestone-mounted DonVesco and these three did most or the racing. The expected looOCc challenge never materlallZed. Grant took no chances and used all soecc- s as best he could to slowly pull away fr om White, who In turn drew a way from Vesco. Fourth overall was Ken Clark, also taking the 1000Cc class. Ken didn't seem to be pushing things, . perhaps because or the For Sale sign s een on his Trlumph-Metisse In the pits. After a terrible start, John McG1lllvray (Triumph) moved up on Clar k, but not enough time r emal ned to get within passIng dis tance. Second 500cc was Reg Pridmore on an obsolete (?) Norton Manx. Another seemingly bygone machine " was the AJS-7R that Bob Bender rode to third In the 350cc class. .
