COMPRESSION RELEASES OUT FOR FLATTRACK 2-STROKES I have e nclosed a copy of a letter 1 received from Jules Horky Utat mi ght Interest you. I was prompted to inquire or the AMA about braking devices, .when I found that to successfully compete against a two-stroke using a compression release for braking, a four-stroke needed a brake. • Dear Mr. Curtis: ·In regards to yo ... questiCHIs concerning COmpressiCHI release as a brakIng device, the rules are very specific and state that no brakes can he used In Class C racing. Since Ibis compressloo release Is used as a brake our InlerpreCation would he that this would not be permitted. At the recent Indoor Short Tnlck National held in H...stoa, there Wet'e several machines wi th compressloo releases or pads that rubbed 011 rear fnIe tires aad frictioo devices 011 flywheels. Tllese Wet'e aD ' disconnected since the COIDIIIitlee felt that they were braking devices and therefore could not he permltled. Siacerely yoors, AMERICAN MOTORCYCLE ASSN. Jules Hartly Conpetitioo D1rec..... 1 don't think It 's fair to handicap the two- strokes by taking a way their biggest asset (their compression release brake) nor do I feel it's fair to run a fourstroke without equal stopping power. The only log ical answer would be to allow everyone a brake. To allow a compression release on a two-stroke and a brake on a four-stroke wouldn't be fair either because the compression release would be a definite advantage. GEORGE W. DOUG HARRISON Sec'y, Nevada Trailblazers M.C. Ren o, Nevada ELLIOTT SCHULTZ SPEAKS OUT AS A PROFESSIONAL RACER My na me Is Elliott Schultz J r . I'm a "sport" mo torcycle racer who Is trying along wi th thousands of oUter "sport" riders to become professional motorcyc le racers. Every l etter Utat's been sent to me by our gr eat dictators somewhere In Ohio keeps calling me a" sport" motorcycle rider . It's true , some ti me In Ute pas t I was a guy who r ode for the sport of motorcycling. Then one day I th ough t, boy, It s ure would be great to hav e all thi s fun and get paid for It, so I sent for a profe s s io nal card whic h cost me $22.00 a yea r, thinking I would be In a club Utat would look after Its me mbers. Anyway, I Utought If I could win 18 race s In a r ow like I had riding sporting events I could make ma ybe $20. 000 a year, ma ybe ev en more (but surely no less). Well , hack In 1964 I was lucky enough to win 44 races, 16 In a row, whic h I was pr oud of. Just for the record this Is how much money I made (and this Is riding for 100% - mos t guy s have to split with Utelr mechanic). I made $8000 . I' m not bragging because honestly I'm ashamed or It. All this time I had a wife and two boys Utat wer e depending on me to take - care of them and as many of you know yo u can get hurt awful easy at the speeds we go. My brother teaches math In Michigan. He said, "Elliott, In order for you to have the one-lap record at22.44seconds you had to average 80.2 mph. ThIs means for that one lap you would be golug into the corner at somewhere ,around 95 mph." So just for ticks, open your car door at 95 mph and jump out. 1ben maybe you'll have some Idea what It's like to fall 011 a half-mile track goiug into a corner at 95 mph. What I'm try1Dgtogy Is I'm asbamed 01 tat1JlIg that cbance for only $8000. Now I th1DIt $38,000 would be more like It. 'IbeD If someone asked me what I do for a living I could stick 11I7 chest out and say "I race motorcycles and I make $38,000 a year and I'm damn proud 01 It." There're two reasons I'm writing this letter. One Is because I tied for that 44 wins wllb another fellow and I tb1Dk that 44 wins ts the most anyone bas ever won In one season at Ascot and I'd like for you to know how little we make and how Ute great dictators somewhere in Ohio are trying to make It even less. The other reason ts I'm thinking Utat many sport riders and professionals and spectators think Ute MRI (Motor cycle Race r s , Inc .) let the m down as far as making mo ney for the pro racers. ThIs Is not true . Did you know Ute MRI bas had four meetings just to vote on If we should ride for 40% or not? And did you also know Utat It was voted each time almost 100% In favor or 40% or nothing, and Utat at the last meeting Ute vote was 17 to ride for $2,100 and 59 not to ride unless It was 40%? Well, as It turned Editorial stnrit"s . ca rtoons; ph ot os. r-tc-, a ft' wl'I('(lI1H-
