Bergquist held onto the lea d all the way around the first loop which was thirty-two miles of deep sandy lralls, with two sandy, rocky hills, a couple of narrow canyons, and a few up and down whoop-de-do's. Patrick came Into the pits third and got a quick gas check and was able to take the lead coming out of the pits. He held the lead all the way through the s econd and third loops to take the win three hours and five minutes of hard r idin g . Bergquist pulled In second with Steve Kirk, #27, blasting his bi g Triumph through the pack to third overall and fi rst Open Expert. Don Bohannan, #158, and 01d- tim e rider of ten years ago , ca me out of retirement last year and pul led off a good ride to take fourth over all an d second Open Expert. Al Baker, #13, also on a Tr iumph, looked r eal good clearing the long rocky hills In a feet- up style that earned him sixth overall and third Open Exper t. Russ r:nrnell, #727x, took seventh on his 250cc Greeves. George Zuber , #41x, was tenth and took the fir s t 250c c Amateur honors on a Gr eev es. John Balley, #852, was the first big bike Ama te ur on a 500cc Bultaco and took twelfth overall. Earl Penny, #134x Greeves, was the first 250cc Novice In, and took twenty- fifth overall . in the pi ts after the race , Pa trick said: " I picked up this Yam aha a t Crown Cycle 'stock' and It went real good in this r ough s tuff, but 1 go t ti red. Two loops woul d have bee n plenty for me. They s ur e gave us our money's worth."
