~ .... ClO .too "", 01 c.. ClO <0 .... 0) ~ .... 01 ~ CI) : C<:I z C<:I -J U :.. U By Maureen L ee Did you check the big bike point standings for the first three months in the current Issue? It looks like it's shaping up Into a fight betwen J im Hunter and John Rice this year and we know Jim wants that number one plate back. But, by the time the copy was set for that llst things had changed and a new challenger Is currently In first place. Terry Dorsch. Terry rode both the O.C.M.C . saddleback scrambles and the 13 Rebels one at Perris the same day while Hunter and Rice only rode one which gave Terry an edge. Would be nice to see that number one on a 40incher agaIn! Don't forget the referees' meeting for scrambles clubs on May 9. The one for deSert refs turned out very well, all Informal just sitting around and offering suggestions as to how things can be Improved. There are always lots of complalnts about how the -desert"gang has the most to say in the Dis trict and often friends, it's because some of the scram~ bles cl ubs don' t put enough effort Into It like running a member for an office , etc. So let's all get a r eferee to that meeting and see if we can't come up with some solutions to our problems . By the time this column comes out we shall have been to Las Vegas for the point run ther e and every time we travel away from home we are struck by the same thought. We all complain that we have too many riders at our sc rambles and tha t we sit around too long etc, etc , etc, but just thi nk about this. if It wasn't for all that fierce competition we have here we couldn't pr oduce the r iders we have, r iders who are pro bably second to none anywhere. A racer can only develop his s kill by r iding a lot and havIng to go a little harder each week to stay up with the troops and If all he has to ride each month Is one or two eve nts with maybe the same eight guys he's not going to have any Incentive to go faster. Those smaller sc rambles are sure fun to r ide but In the overall picture they aren't going to produce riders who will be capable of mktng the long climb to the top as a professional racer. Most scramblers have no Intention of ever turning pro but it's nice to think that you might just make It if you can make It big In District 37. VEGAS RArNS DOUSE 'C A R IG RD. SPEEDWAY ., B y Ge ne Drew A good fie ld carne to the line In the 250Cc~ sportsman go and a real battle devel oped between Billy William s, Jr • and Monte Montoya (the fat man who fal ls down a lot). Montoya stayed up this ti me, though passed by John Randolph, and got a big hand for his efforts . The first three wer e al l on Bultac os . in the 250cc professional, Tob Tooley domina ted the scene on a new 250 Yam aha with Terry Grlebel(Kawasakt) a cl ose second ahead of Jay Willey, this tim e on a Montesa. LadY Luck has a way of doing strange things In Las Vegas, the town wher e her pr esence Is felt 24 hours a day . However , motorcycles and Craig Road Speedway have yet to put togethe r a winning combination. After getting blown out March 17 it was felt that the April 21 date had to be a good one ••.an d things s tarted off well enough. The entry list pro mised an excell ent pr ogr am , the track (though small) was In fine , fast s hape and during practice the riders got a nice feel of the cour s e. A sparse but enthus iastic crowd .eag er ly awaited the s tart of the day's racing. First out were the 100cc combined classes. Two local lads, Gary Wells and Mike North, captured the Interest of the spectator s by performing well beyond their tender years, running 1-2 In the sportsman class aboard Yamaha and Brldgestone respectively. Hatcher, Ha.mett Haul The Open Class saw a short field but once the starter' s flag fell, all eyes were on Triumph-mounted Chuck Hatcher and Dan Har nett aboard a new 360Cc Bultaco. Wheel to wheel for both heats they kept the crowd's attention all the way, and Hatcher took the checker by about a four-spoke margin. Dame Fortune and the weatherman got mad at each other and just as the finals started the heavens opened up, calling a halt to the day's competition. Riders were paid on the bals of moto-cross points for the heats, and all looked forward to the next event, In hopes that It could run to completion. (Results on page 20) Willey Wails Jay Willey (Brldgestone) took all three of the professional class 100cc events with Norm Hanse n,.(Yamaha) and Paul Coberly (Tohonda) finishing r ight behind him each time out. Duane Bennett (Honda) ran fourth. u,~~f8'tg TH TWO WHEELER _ T · ph ' .._.k· Bulla E nurn I ,)U.LU I, co. Home of Oanpions. Full parts. Service and Access. One ~0Cl. .... 01Inl.,d Cenler. 8611.
