Twenty-!1ve .representattves from the
Southern Californla Road Riders' Committee broke bread with patients at the
City of Hope National Medical Center
and toured the hospital and research
facUlties at Duarte, Californla, Sunday,
Apr il 7.
Mel He!n1nger, Exe cutive Coor d1nator
of the multi-mlll1on dollar, 92-aere,
pilot medical center, explained that the
City of Hope was not a genera:! hospital
nor an emergency fac Ulty and thus was
shut down on weekends exc ep t for patie nt
services. Because of this the motorc ycli sts could mosey through and eyeball
areas normally avallable to " Authorized
Personnel Only."
Eighty-five percent of the riders attending were new to the RRC since the
last tour three or four years ago. They
found it a r ichly rewarding experience
and gave new meaning to the annual City
of Hope Spring Tour that the RRC sponsors every April. The y learned that the
National Medical Center was one of the
top five research centers In the country
and the only western facility ranJd."lg
with such eastern names as Mayo, . Anderson restitute and Betheseda..
Many of the Mders were surprised to
learn that the Cl.ty of Hope was aetually
4 hospitals to one, though It began with
tre2tment of tuberculosis. As T .B. fen

expanded to Include all chest diseases

Other wings to deYelop were the Cancer

The most fascinating part of the tour
was looking at the radiation chambers
with their s piral corridors and mirror
viewing systems. The radiating maeh1Des
resembled something from a sciencenetion scene, but each rider knew they
were very real and very Impor tant to
the patients who owe their lives to the
monstrous hulks.
" If we mortals were so much as to
open the door to surgery, It would take
two days to wash down and decontaminate the place," He1n1nger commented as
he led the cyclists past the portals where
ope n heart surgery was develOped and is
now commonplace.
In t I! e X-ray department, the Z5
riders literally jammed a small room to
inspect. a huge fluoroscopic scanner costing $122, 000 and capable of making motion pictures, remote television display

The t1nal stop was at HopeAudttorium
where the proceeds of previous Spring
Tours have sponsored and paid for a
complete sound system. Suitable not only
for the normal stage functions of an
auditorium, the motorcyclists' contribution to the Ci ty of Hope features a
sophisticated multiple microphone setup thai is used by seientlsts and researchers who eome from all over the
world to attend conferences and seminars and participate in the more than 100
research pr ojec ts under way at the City
of Hope.
Representatives of the Road Riders
Committ ee hope to realize sufficient
proceeds from the ' 68 Spring Tour to
make a significant contribution to the
children's wing where just one day 's
care costs $285 - yet no patient has
ever paid a penny for care at the City
of Hope .
