AMA sanctioned. SEPTEMBER 1-14MILE NATIONAL CHAM PIO NSHIP DIRT TRACK Bob Barl. Motorcycle racing will resume Friday CJ night, April 26 at Ascot Park In Gardena following announcement of a setUement between promoter J . C . Agajanian, Motorcycle Racers, Inc. and the American Motorcycle Association. Post time for the firs t event on the l 8-race menu Is 8: 15 p.m, All the top fi1ght Novices, Amateurs and Experts will compete. After originally being offered a nat $1500 guaranteed purse, riders boycotted the April 5 race, demanding m or e money. Agreement was quickly reached between the MRI and the promoter, with the purse to be $1500 against 40 % of the gate. The promoter would take over money formerly paid to the AMA for Insurance and in turn provide Insurance as good or better than that furnished by the AMA. Last week a meeting of the Exe cuti ve Committee of th e AMA was held In Washington, D.C. to decide whether or not they would approve the agree m ent. They didn't. A three-page di r ective was is s ued stating , among other things, that all AMA races m ust be cove r ed by their package AMRM BA ins urance de al . Anoth er meeting took place Monday night, April 23 be twe e n Promote r Agajanian, representatives of the MRI (C .R. Axtell, Bill Heins, Albe r t Gunter, Myron MIll s and Jer r y Cr ivello), an d r epr esentati ve s of the AMA ( Pr es i de nt Bill Bagnall, Vice P r es ident Frank Heacox and Dis trict 37 Refe ree Chub Kellam) . Onc e again agreem e nt was quickly r eached between the MRI and the promoter . NOW, since AMA insurance m us t be used, although Aggie's proferred coverage was .be tt e r- Incl udi ng total benefits of $7600 ove r the AMA's coverags..-lI was decided that the purs e would be $ 1800 agains t 40% of the gate, $300 of which would be allotte d s pecifically fo r adve rtiseme nt of motorcycle racing at Ascot P ark. On Tuesday morning, Apr1l23 , a phone call was placed by Refere e Kell a m to AMA Executive Director Bill Berry regarding the ne w p roposal. The answer NO. Kellam was told that onl y a nat purse, star system structure would !le acceptable. (Under pr es e nt AMA ruling, 10% of all prize mon ey m us t go to the AMA's AMRM BA Insurance fund.) Yet ANOTHER meeting was held later that morning between representatives of Motorcycle Racers, Inc. and J .C . Agajanian. Working within the framework set up by the AMA, It was necessary to reach another amicable agreement, In time to Inform the MRI general membership and the public, Ifracesweretostart Friday, April 26 as previously planned. Again, agreement was reached. The season will definitely begin as scheduled, the riders will definitely r ide , the AMA will definitely sanction, and the events will conform to standards set by the sanctioning body. However , the purse, Instead of a nat $1500 earlier arrived a t by the AMA, will now be a nat $2,100$600 a week more than the original guarantee, and $1500 a week more than last year's $600 guarantee . So, despite missing three weeks of races, riders and tuners alike can look forward to a far more luc r a ti ve season, thanks primarlly to the hard-working efforts of Motorcycle Racers, Inc. And fans can on ce more thrill to the roars of the mighty m otorcycles at Ascot p ark, 183rd and Vermont, every Friday nig ht.
