LEGISLATIVE tmTEBOOK (Continued (rom previo us page) This year even !he money-committee chairman Is saying, " I don't know If apparel Is a proper subject for law. " There wasn't anything at all said about money. ' What does lhis mean ? I am not sure. I don' t know anyone else who Is . But somelhing Is changing. You can feel It. A motorcycle r ider makes aplea.: for his liberty, even at !he cost of his li fe ••.and legislators listen. A citiz en says certain parts of his life are not for !he s ta te to declde••.and !he state agrees. Wllhin !he balls of gover nment you hear It mor e and more: " Too many laws". 1 4 We can 't regulate everylhing." " Let people decide for !hemselves." Have we reached !he point of maxi mum control? Or Is lhis a small brea!her before It gets worse? I don' t know. But It seems that government Is a little less confident, a little less omnipotent, even a little less ambitious !han I can remember It being. Maybe !he " age of security" Is coming to an end. Maybe we have realized that It Is all a giant hoax anyway. Life Is rlskl Ful l life is full r is k! Wealth Isn't securIty, It Isn't money, It Is n't even power. Weal!h Is li ving !he time you've got ac cording to your Individual concept of richness and It's knowing that your concept Is not your neighbor's and !herefore you can't make his decisions for him. If we are beginning ~ a nation to understand lhis, maybe we are beginning to experience !he oft-quoted " r ebir !h of liberty." If we are willing to take !he r isk, we can find the r ichness, If we are willing to live and perhaps die, seeking not the safety of a padded cocoon, but !he weal!h of personal exploration and experlence••.If we dare to be free ••.and to trust our fell ow humans wI!h fr eedom ••• ThIs Is what !he American le gend was about, but really never quite was. We have been pushing an empty word all over !he world. Freedom Isn' t a for m of government. It Is a personal adventure . It takes courage and persistence, and a sense of humor. Freedom has nolhing to do wI!h safety. Weal!h has nothing to do wI!h security. Life has nothing to do wI!h death , They are opposites on !he continuum. When you are dead you are very, very safe. They Joined !he District lhis month, petitioned for the Gophers date , received It and we . understand are planning to !hrow !heir run at Adelanto . That's real en!huslasm for you! In scrambles cl ub standings !he Dir t Diggers are !he number one heavyweight and at !he last count !he Powder Puff As s ociation !he li ghtweight leaders al!hough !he gals know they won't be able to hang onto !he top position Insplte of having just about a 100% turnout of members each race.
