Th e Lompoc Sio-Pokes M.C. hosted th ei r second moto- cros s at th e Santa Maria Speedway l ocation on Sunday, March 31, to th e delight of 104 entri es. With overcast skies and deep green backdr op th e show proceeded to commence wi th some rather notable riders coming qulte a di stance to participate. Ray McC arty, Ron Nelson, Ji m Nichol son, and Lon Peterson headed up the list of top notc h riders co ming up to play at a non- affiliated r un. Ever -powerful T om Davis and hJs trusty Sach s pr oceeded to exhJbit thei r prowess by copping the 125cc Expert event wi th A l Davis ( Honda) In fo r a hot second. Ken Green was having hJs problems with hi s Bridgestone mount In the first two motos and at last fou nd the culprit (battery) and n ew on to a good ride In the tbJrd moto and third overall. Lon P.tersan ( CZ) wOllnd up 2nd and In the ,250 Expert class. Twa-filly Juniors t ake fi r st tum af ter n...- verti cal jum and eyeball the upcoming hili. A s many as 37 ri ders funnelled through this spat at one t i me. p In The Famil y! Kawasaki moun ted Ken Green Jr . snatched firs t place br ass in the 250Cc Jr . event by taking f irst in all three motos . Watc h tbJs guy in the f uture, it's only hi s tbJrd moto-cross. Dlxte Sanders seized second aboard a Bultaco. Fantastic Show! Lon Peterson aboard th e ever-smooth CZ grabbed th e fi rst 250Cc Expert moto with Ray Mc Carty and George Ether idge followi ng UP . The second moto proved to be a riot with Pet erson and McCarty battling it out for the top spot, and the Yamaha of McC arty was first to get the black and white. Now wi th a win for Peterson and a win for McCarty the next moto would tell the story. But who do we see out there in con tention, why it's Mon te sa mounted Ji m Nichol son. Ji m had throttle trouble i n the first moto cr ashIng five times, and fell once and stalled once In the second. Now In th e third moto he grabbed a good third at the start and proceeded to pick of! Peterson and Etheridge but McC arty wasn' t going to gi ve in easy, as he had the l ead. But at this potne Nicholson, l ooki ng dete rmined if somewhat squirrelly, made hJs move and got by Ray to take th e wi n with a grand finale wheelle and looping it at the same time to the amusement of all. With th e results out it showed McCarty first, Peterson second, Etheridge tbJrd and Nicholson fourth. Montesa mounted Ron Nelson and Maico rider Lon Peterson put on a fan tastic show of real riding prowess as they fought for top honors in the 500 Expert class . Peterson had won the first moto, and the second was one of the greate st shows thi s reporter has seen In a long time. The t wo top r i der s were never more tha n twe nty feet apart and making an extremely fas t pace. Nelson snatched the second moto wi th Lon coming in second. Ronnie also took hJs new 360Cc Capra Montesa to a win In the third moto to clinch hJs over all win. The Slo- Pokes pu t on a well organIzed event and must be com mended f or suc h enthusiasm as was In eveidence. We must point out here that th e conces sion stand was good, r estroom facilities exc ellent, and th e cleanup of the track after the r ace was a si ght for sore eye s . l! you want to be sure of a great little track and a good time whether you ride or spec ta te be sure to watch f or the SIc-Pokes M .C .' s next Moto-Cross .
