Almost the same cast in a top fuel bike show but the story carried a different ending. Last weekend at the Lions'all-bike racing program, Leo Payne and his 75-inch Harley-Davidson Sportster turned a top el apsed time which was matched by only one other contender. This week his quick fuel burner cut a single run of 9.52 seconds that remained untouched by the total of ten machines ' tha t fought for top bike honors . All through the day, nine-second territory seemed virtually out of reach as the qua11l)rlng attempts ranged from low tens to mld - thlrteen seconds. Leo's nine-second charge seemed to cause a definite pattern of thought as to who was going to do what, but again the old bl t of advice about taking nothlng for granted loomed Into the program as the elimination races entered final stages. Eight of the ten had met the tate of a los er by going too slow or changing from a few moving parts to a whole basket full. One te rrible example of near disaster was Joe Smith's Harley's blow and lock-up in the lights. Would you care to have an englne seize at near 148 miles per hour?!1 Mr . Laid1a w slippped Joe a tranqulllzer by simply stating, " Back to the drawing board." The final round lett Leo Payne and Boris Murray locked 10combatlor bucks. Murray's tw1n-englne Triumph was still a ten -second runner due to unsolved problems, but Leo 's niche was well into the nines . Leo Payne drew the big red eye but s tor med out of the hole as though the red was nothing at all. Of course, Murray didn't sit Idle or back off the throttle; all he saw was a Harley sprinting all down the quarter mile . It was an automatic win for Murray but his E. T. was a hair slower than Payne's, and I do mean a hair! Leo Payne turned 9.74 seconds and Murrays twin engine Triumph cut a 9.75 seconds I An infinitely small one hundredths of a second . By.
