Compania Espanola De Motores , to be exa ct. 1 have a 1965 Bultaco PurSang.lti s timed correc tly. 1 use Torco oil mixed 20-1 i n regul ar gas. The bike misses as though it were fo uling a plug, but this i s not the case. The condenser is mounted in the open and is a Mall ory. Someti mes when it is running this way it will catch and go li ke mad on top end but never as well as it shoul d. T he condi tion happens as the bike becomes hott er such as when runni ng up a wash. I've tri ed assort ed jets, plu g ranges and etc. , to no avail. This same problem has been experi enced by other riders of my acquaintance. D. W - Pal m Sprin gs. . USED Ph HONDA PARTS TE :~:58 Wilmmgton Discount Cycle Center 1505 Avalon, Wilmington, Calif. ANSWER: The problem is undoubted- . ly e lec t ric . .F irs t pos s ibil ity is a bad wind in g in the low tension coil. Though all ri ght at low sp eeds and when cold , as those conditions cha nge the windings may chafe or rub and produce the breakdown you are suffering . .A s econd possibil ity is loos e wires behind the magneto that a re contacting (rubbing) the shaft or flywhee 1. If those loos e wires aren't the problem then back to the coil . T he only way to chec k this out properly is to plu g in a new unit . Do not j ust c onnect one parallel to the old one, it mus t be disconne ct ed entirely and a new one installed• Since you mentioned · up a wash" I assum e you're a esert rid er . Many PurSang rid ers hav e .ins ta lle d a co mplete seco nd ignitio n sy stem - coil and condenser in con junction with a switch. When a s eve ntually must happ en on deser t trails , an ignition system fails , a flick of the switch just keeps thi ngs going fine . Tha t sur e beats pus hing! QUESTION: 1 woul d like to know if it' s possible and how you would go about setting up a total l oss i gni tio n sys tem on a Hodaka and a Bul taco · Sherpa" 125. I 've read about yo ur views on T otal L oss I gnition in the Aug ust 3, 1967 edition, but since then I' ve received in formation about the Judson "CycleTron . · It claims to put a better spark than a coil and not decreases at higher rpm. Would the change still be a waste of time and effort? G.S.Greenbrae, Calif. ANSWER: I sur e wish we knew what type of ridi ng you us e the Bul taco and Hodaka for. If it' s for a ny scramble s , de s er t e tc . , I would without hesitation s ta te tha t re gardless of coil effic ie ncy a to ta l los s ignition system would be a was te of time and effort. The Judson " Cyc leTr on" is a coil a nd a very effic ie nt one . I hav e s een a pair of the m us ed for drag racin g ignition set-ups, but that is vi rtua lly the only pla ce I can recommen d for a T .L. igniti on. In whate ver ignitio n system you origi nally s ta rt with , all compone nts except the break er poi nts and cam must be disconnected or done away with. T he J udson coils have a six volt primary windi ng; thus your machi ne must have s uch a battery voltag e rating. A twel ve volt battery will do, if you use a 6 volt droppin g resistor in series with the positive battery lead . .A compl et e se t of wiring instructions ar e included with the J udson units, but again I do not recommend the tota l los s unle ss your us e of the cycle is very limi ted! QUESTION: I own a 68xCI 00 Moto Beta wi th the standard Cerian i fork s. 1 woul d like to remove the dust covers and i nstall the external seals that are used on a lo t of current .scramblers. Does Ceriani or any oth er company make such a s6"1l for thi s unit? R.W.-Whittier, Cal . ANSWER: Th ere is already an e x- ternal s eal under thos e boots yo u wis h to remove . No ot her type of se al is manufact ured. I heartily re commend you l eave the boots in pla ce. Despite the e fficie ncy of this seal , some foreign ma tter s are going to work into the bushings a nd demand an overhaul before the du e time with boots in pla ce. QUESTION: Why does an engine run rich when the weather is cold and damp? I find that my bike is still rich even after it's fully warmed up. B.D. - San Jose. AtISWER: A s the weath er bec omes cold and damp the fue l/ai r rati o is greatly e ffec ted. A good example is to imag i ne yo ur engi ne intak e port is virt ually j us t tha t when the valve is closed . Now, which holds more air , an empty jar or one half full of water ? Exact ly , the empty one! But, when th e air is da mp your in tak e has a quan tity of wate r that j ust will not a llo w as much air to combi ne with the fuel your ca rburetor je t syst em is providin g.
