Zaitz The SaUnas Ramblers winter scr am bles season came to an end on Ma rch 24 with a well organized, hotly con tested day of racing. As is his habit, Triumph rider Bruce Anderson (2) provided spectators with the bes i show of the day in the Open Expert class. Anderson look home the Ramb lers' biggest firs t place trophy for the third time thi s year, but he had 10 earn it . Bob Fo rtlno(64P)pushedAnderson extremely · hard during the entire race, and Bruce jus t did manage to take the win by about ten feet . He and Fortino exchanged the lead three times during the Main Event, and left the rest of the field a consider able distance behind. In the 30. 50 division, Mark Br elsstor d (3), riamg a new B ultaco 360, easlly won the 500 Expert class, though Don Castro ( 8) stayed close during the first part of the race , Castr o fa ded in the las t two laps and los t second place 10 Bob Grossi. Brels ford and Grossi went at it again in the 250 Expert r a ce, but Ma rk's Pur Sang decided to qui te r unning while he was in the lead and Gr os si look the win on a Montesa . The only double winner of the day was Jan Mireault (54 T) who captured the 650 Novice race on a Triumph and the 250 Novice on a Bultaco, Greg Randy (127M) and Dave Cadwallader (16M) challenged Mireault hard in the 650 race, but he thoroughly trounced all competition in the 250 class . The most embarrassed rider of the day had to be John Paro (75B) who, after pushing his beautiful Triumph Metisse to a fine ' victory in the 500 Amateur class , decided to do a wheelie across the finish line in celebration of the event. Things didn't work quite the way he had planned, and the Triumph came ail the way over on him and proceeded 10 shred parts of itself all along the straightaway. Many obstacles greeted riders on the I.3·mlte course. Mud, water, deep sand, natural jumps and obstacles were all put logether 10 form a moto-cross, the first held on a recent Sunday at Sun Valley, north of Reno, Nevada. Ninety -five riders from Nevada and Northern California gota try at the first event of its type in the area, and one out-of-state rider said it was the best course he 'd been on. What makes a good moto-crossz Doug Harrison, from Reno, says it should be rough . "And the rougher the better." With this idea in mind, the Nevada Trailblazers M.C. spent three weekends preparing the 1.3- mlle cour se that sent riders plunging down gulleys, and working around tight corners as over 200 spectalors looked on. Winners in the 100cc Novice class were Ron Drapper, first; Curt McKlnny, second. Roger Smart took the 100cc Amateur/Expert class ahead of Barclay Trehal.
