" He has confidence, and the ability to come out • of a rough di tch riding the front whe el full throttle, then goes into another ditch and comes out OK-and he does hit everything." This was a thinking man 's course, and the trick was to be up-wind of the dust and still not go too wide on the turns. The Lost Coyotes picked a good area for the run, as there was only one sh ort stretch of rocks, and the rest of the course was rock-free, maldng it easy to get off the main trail to pass without the fear of hitting a boulder. Largest Trail Bike Entry This was one of the largest entries over In the trail bike class; two hundred and fifty eager riders in all. They were to go two loops on the same twenty-six mile course , but started fifteen minutes after the big bikes. At the drop of the banner, the long line of r iders took off running In Le Man s style. At the s moke bomb there wer e three different groups-coming up the valley on the left side , or main trail , was Don Aflack, #542 In the lead; Dick Wright, #9, was leading on the mid dle trail, an d Jack Fr oeli ch, #2 was leadlng T ral lblkes covered two 01 the 27-mi le loops ; big bikes went around the ci rcuit three ti mes. Here Hodaka and Bullaco battle It out. Separate trail bIke course was advert ised , but Lost Coyotes bowed to wishes 01 Calilo rnia City landowner s. the trail on the right. As they passed the smoke, it narrowed down to a single trail, an d some of the bikes had a little tr ouble with the deep sand a nd long uphills , but the riders who kept their RP M'S up to keep on top of the sa nd were able to ma ke it OK . , Jack Froelich led It through the pits on his Bultaco on the fIrst loop , with Jack Mor gan, #1, r ight behind him. Jim JackIelt, #11, was thir d and Don Atlack, #542, was fourth . The last loop was a r eal battle, beca use the cou rse was r eally che wed up by thi s ti me. But Jack Mor gan was able to pass Froelich In the r ough to come i n for the win. Froelich pulled i n second, righ t on Morgan's tail. Jim JackIe tt took thi rd, an d Bob Belt, the numbe r one 250cc rider plac ed four th. ThefIrstamate ur was Monte Lee, #43, in sixth. Our oid des er t Hound Eddie Cr owe ll , #92 pulled in a tired seventh on his Hodaka , after ge tting a r eal good start and foulIng a pl ug ten miles out, which caused him to drop ba ck to twentieth and pass all those r iders again. The· Lost Coyotes put on a good run, well limed and well ma r ked with ribbon, with lots of cl ub offlc tals all over the course . As one rider put It , " The r e was so much lime an d so many markers that I just couldn' t ge t lost." (Results on pag e 16) ...
