Cool a nd confident La r r y Bergquist, #888x on his red 250cc Bultaco ;Pursang, won the seventy-eight-mile Lost Coyotes M.C. Hare Scrambles last Sunday at California City against thr ee hundred and twenty big bike riders , The start was hel d up for thirty minutes because of the large entry an d the latecomers ( It s ee ms eve r yone likes this area, as there are no roc ks to speak of). At the drop of the banner, the combined Open an d 250Cc r iders took off in the nat s tarting area, a mid deep sand, lots of bus hes, and many trai ls . There a r e a lot of dus t, but it didn' t bother Eddie Mulder who was In the lead at the smoke bomb on his 360 Montesa, with Mike Patrick, 1f7, just a hundred feet behind him . Bergquist was running about twentieth at the bomb . Mulder didn't make It all the way a r ound on the fir st loop, and Mike Patrick, who took over the lead , broke his clutch cab le and had to shift without a clutch. Steve Kirk. #27 on a Tr iumph, - .;: c.. "= Above: Thl rd overall and 2nd Open was Norton-mounted Mike Patrick (7). Sneaking a peek behind him, Steve wound up 1st 500cc Amaleur and 5th on hi s Bul taco. who was last wee k's winner , then pulled into fi r s t place. Bergquis t was moving uP al l this time by pulling off the ma in trail about twenty feet to ge t out of the dus t, an d was jus t plal n making It In the r ough. A mil e fr om the pi ts, Ber gquist put the pass on Kirk and came through the pits in first place. Kirk was second, p atrict< third, an d Fred Reva, #51, was fourth. The first loop made a real enjoyab le r ide, but the second time around, the course got chewed up quite a bit. The deep, sandy trails and sand....a shes had deep r uts in them, and the big dips mad e It up- an d- down in the deep sand. r- Spectacular Full-Bore Finish The third loop was even worse, which made it a matter of who could go the fastest in the rough, and Bergquist didn 't le t anyone down; he got off about ten miles from the finish, but had time to fix his broken throttle and come into the finish for the win. One minute later Steve Kirk, #27, came in to take second place and fi rst Open Expe r t, followed by Mike patrick on the Norton . Ron Fry, #6, pulled In 5th to take first 500 Expe r t on his Husky, and young Steve Staats, #95, placed 6th for first 500 Amateur on his new black-and- white Bultaco Bandido. Staats has be en finishing in the top ten since the start of the year , and is now the top Ama te ur . Two Novices had a good go r ight uP to the fini s h line, with Randy Burak, #796, winning out over Wally Dempsey, #259.
