We have had considerable adverse effects as a result of this article and would appreciate very much if you could print a shor t paragraph someplace In your next publication slating that the BSA VICTOR ts in production and will continue to be In production indefinitely. JOE HOPE, Sales Manager ""Jo-- M.M~~ I just finished reading your "April Fool" edition of Cycle News and it was just great' Also, it'll be a welcome sight to read about the Daytona race results a week after they happen - not three months as in the American Motorcycling Magazine. My husband I are avid race fans Ibelong to the Motor Maids of California (northern), and we tr y to keep up with the lates t race results . This can only be done through the Cycle News. BOBBIE LEWIS san Jose, Califor n1a V-E-R·Y INTE RESTING Jim Peter son' s re cent letter (Voices) Vol. V-II IO regari:llng " Join UP or Shut Up" was V-&-R- Y inter esting. Fi r s t of al l, Mr. Peterson, may I s ugst you re-read my article. You evidently did not comprehend what I wrote . Secondly, Mr. Peterson, I hardly think I was speaking only for myself, s ince one man hardly qualifies a race. Last, but not least, Mr. Peterson, even though your statement regarding joining a club had nothing whatsoever to do with my letter, I'll try to satisty your curiosity. Up until 3 years ago, I was an active member of the Jack Rabbits M.C. for 3 yea rs; previous to that , I belonged to So. Calif. M.C. I fee l, si nce I no longer belong to a club, that the best way I can contribute to the cl ubs Is to ride their events, paying full entry fees!!! Figure it up $$$$. GARY BAILEY Carson, Calif. MORE SENATORIAL SUPPORT The following response to his letter was r eceived by Cycle News reader Robert Massingill regarding helmetlegtslation: " Tha nk you ror your letter inrorming me or your v ews 01\ legislation calling i ror helmets ror motorcycle riders. I oppose d this legls lation last year when It was introduced and will do SO again this )'ear. Sincerely, ..... JOHN G. SCHMITZ Thirty-Fourth Senator ial Dist. Orange County sacramento, Cal if." YAY! in Th e California State senate Tran sportation Committee cho ppe d the helme t provi s ian from Sen a te Bill III without object io n and pa s s ed the remaind er of the bill to the senate .F'loor. T he bill had been pre vious ly a mended by the author Ral ph C. Dills of T orr an ce to ag ree with .AB 289. In the future SB III wi ll read exac t ly lik e 289 except for the deletion of all re fere nc e to mandatory helm et weari ng. The removal of the helmet re s tri ct ion was moved by senato r W lsh of Hunti ngton P ar k, and s eca onded by senator Cus an o vich of Van Nuy s, who ha s lo ng oppose d com puls ory helrnets, sen . Efforts by .Assemblyman Karab lan of Mon terey P ar k. Negri of Gra na da Hills and Schab ar um of Covina to chop helmets from J ohn Foran's bill failed i n that commi ttee. Auth or F or an (San Fran ci s co) was adamant that his bill be passe d o ut as written an d so it was •.As s e mblyman Kar a blan' s amendme n t would hav e le ft he lme t standards to be s et an d required that helmets sold in the state me et those standards , a logical pro vision. At one poi nt Foran, who had stepped down as Chairman of the committee whil e his bill was bein g heard , was asked by the temporary chai rman "John, do you want the bi ll to pass withou t hel me ts, or don 't you want the bill to pass. " "I want it to pass e xact ly as it is written ," said Foran. And it was thus. An ove rwhelming weight of te s timony was presented to indicate that there is no more rea s on to forc e he1me ts on cyc le riders than on the occ upants of autom obiles or eve n on pedestrians and people taking a bath . Footwear Bill Passes Assembly Committee .AB 366 a utho re d by L . E. T ownsend of T orran ce sailed through the Assembly Trans po rta ti on Committee T hursd ay on the p ropwash of the helm et argument. In spite of testimony presen ted that footw ear was in the sam e category as helmets as being a n unfit subject for law , As sem b lyma n T owns end insisted that proper footwea r co uld preven t accide nts a ffec t i ng othe rs beside the cyclis t (you migh t be unable to pu t on the bra ke if yo u had stubbe d you r toes) , and a wea ry co mmittee stampe d it • Do P a s s'. T he bill calls for protective foo t cove ri ng ha vin g a ha rd so le . No sandals or s hoes wit h a n ope n toe will be allowe d: .AB 366 goes directly to the As s e mbly floo r then to the senate Tran s porta tion c ommi tt ee . So a few letters on this s ubject ar e called for from California motorcycle riders. You might point ou t that e ven though you disapprov e of barefoot motorcycle riders , a stubbed toe is e ven less reason to impose governme nt re gulation on pe rsonal li ber ty than any of the othe r " comp ulsory body a rmor" hysteria whi c h we oppose .
