.... 0') TROY JORGENSON MONTANA M MORIAL SCRAMBLES E • Story and Photo by Cha rlie Rossell It 00 'D .... was a cold March day, 1963, when 0') 54-year-old Troy Jor genson, fr om Harlowton, Montana, quallf ied for the Trophy Dash at the Black Eagl e Scrambles Track in Great Falls, Montana. After parking his bike, this all-around veteran of motor cycle compe ti tion suffer ed a seizure . On the way to the hos pital, Exper t Number 87w, Troy Jorgenson died of a heart attack. Eac h year the Gr ea t Falls Motor cycle Club opens the Montana r ough event season by dedicating the first r ace in memory of this great competitor . Snowy Scramble • '. Under cloudy s kies and s now flurries the 125cc Main Event r oared away on Sunday, March 10. Kawasaki-mounted Bruce Smi th sponso r ed by Er landson Cycle of Lewistown, Montana squeaked out a narrow win over Rober t Vonada and his Van Tech Hodaka. Bringing up the third pla ce position was Hodakamounted John Klemenclc fro m Great Falls. The 250cc main was black-flagged when Dick Hembd and his Bultaco slid out and Larry Mill of Helena, Montana did a wild high-side endo after losing control of his Bultaco in the sweeper. On the re- start Robert Vonanda (also Bultaco) leaped in fron t to take the win followed by anothe r Helena, Montana rider Ed Vtros tko. Jim Klemenclc picked up third place spot after a bad start. He brought his Sprint from fifth to third but was unable to overtake Vlrostko. The 650Cc Main was an easy win for Jim Slack with Dennis Sows. tying up the second place spot. Three-Way Go As the Troy Jorgenson Open Class conte nders lined up three riders looked like possible winners - Triumph- mounted Jimmy Slack and the Bultaco team of Robert Vonada and Ed Virostko riding for Ray's Cycle Shop of Helena . These three had turned the fastest !tmes. Charging off the line Vonada made it clear that he was the one to beat as he led the race In By Robert O. Playing it safe, Vlrostko hung a wheel under the Triumph and walted. Finally on the fifth lap Slack went wi and Virosiko dove under and went on to take second spt with Slack forced to settle for show position. The track was in excellent condition and although it was a blustery day there was a good turnout for the kick off race of the season.
