March 3 the Kern County Trailblazers of Shafter held a European scrambles In Elk HIlls, about 15 miles North of Taft, Calif. Two courses were laid out and each class had an appOrtunlty to run on both for double potnts, The cour ses were laid out on the nor th s lope of Elk Hills and were a challenge to all the r iders and their bikes. One course was 5 miles and the other 3 mUes In length. What the shorter course lacked In distance It made up for In sand traps, Jumps and steepness. TIle Trailblazers are a new club and last year their Inaugural event was a 4lap cr os s - country race around an 18mile course laid out In the same area. This year they decided to try the dual course so everyone could pile up points, crossed with dry washes . The surface ranged from a fine silt with no bottom to loose sand In the wash bottoms; all In all not conduslve to fast riding. The first few laps were slow but as the riders gained confidence the lap times picked up and ther e was some good action. The 0 to 120cc class r an 45 minutes and the r est of the riders ran an hour on each course. The Idea was to see how many laps could be made In the allotted time. By day's end, there were some awfully tired riders ready to head home and either brag how they were king of the hill••• or lick their wounds. U fast, r ough desert riding Is your bag keep an ear out for the Trailblazers' next race. It should be another good one. (Results on page 20). ,.
