The first race didn 't start until 9'30 a .m, and the heavyweights were lined up for their first one ot the day at 4 0' clock! So while we're on the awful things that happened tor the day we'll continue. Yeah, we were among the lightweight riders who would cheertully have hung the lightweight starter trom the yardarm ••.a coupl e ot times he was more than lucky he didn't get his Roman sandals run over •••the club didn't have tech Inspection 3l\d we spotted in just one race tbree kick- stands on machines on the line and another time one with road equipment on It•••there was a "kiddie" bike out In 250cc practice ( lOOcc or under is a " kiddie" bike) and some 250' s snuck out i n the 100-175 practice plus the starter let some out •••dus t was a very bad problem espe cially atter it got dark and the short track was n't watered trom then on cr eating problems with dazzle tbrough dust, goggl es or face shlelds •••there were no lights on th e back down hill, light being provided by a pickup truck parked in the Infield. The saddest thing to report now is that Dlvld Kllnkenborg died ot his injuries received atter a tall in the 500Cc Novice event, and I know that all ot us who ride or attend scrambles extend our most sympathetic thoughts towards his tamily at this time. None ot us are competing i n a sport as sate as tennis or tiddiy- winks but we are all saddened when one of us does go trom our scene. Now. To get to the good things ot the day . We are not Int endi ng to write a story blasting the Perris Valley M.C. or the tr ack owner trom here to bell. There are always things on the other side ot the story. Well aware that their cl ub is undermanned, Perris Valley asked tor and was promised help t r om the Hawthorne Gophers, anoth er club having membership difficulties. Ten Gophers said th ey would show; only tbree did, so the r e was Perris Valley with a huge turn -out of 332 riders and about seven people to tbrow it. The Gophers who did show worked hard; one who was riding stood his turn In -between races with a red !lag and we' ll say again that very of ten the loudest comp laints came trom riders who won' t belong to a cl ub but who can't get It tbrough their thick heads that with out clubs the y wouldn't have the A.M .A . point sy st em goi ng tor them . So when they bitch we figure that unless the y are willing to stand on a corner and work or set up heat boards, they don't have much r oom to yell! And In spite ot all these troubles, the Perris Valley M.C . came tbrough with the results in tim e t or our deadline. ~ Spectacular s1 dehack crash occurred when I he I hrott le came off.
