VICTORY Three former Ascot Grand Prix will1ers went to the line for the 8th annual running of the longest bikebreaker of the season in Gardena, Calif" and all three were still around at the finish. But only one, Skip Van Leeuwen, made it a Sunday ride. The "Dutchman" CI'IIised bts way to his third win in eight tries and it was by far his easiest victory of hi s will1ing threesome. Because it came easy Skip did notbreak his own track record - he missed by less than 3 seconds aad the combillltion of Skip, Tri-.II and ttIIaster Mechani c, Danny Macias scored again. Only three-ti me winner of the 100-lappe, until Van L eeuwen did the deed this time, Dick Dorrestey n and his T ri umph soarld t o a final 7th place flnl sh. 1966 winner Eddie Mulder posted the fastest time tr i al and took the pol e pos ttion v/ith the always surprising Harlan Bast alongside and Van Leeuwen on the outside of th e choice f r ont r ow. Mulder took the l ead and held It for 14 laps until hampered by mechanical problems and then the cycle salesman from Sherman oaks went fiylng by and on to the win. Chuck Jones got the action goi ng early when he stuffed a front wheel Into the back of anothe r machine In the first turn of the first lap . Chuck went high-side and down to the turf and out of the race. Many of the r iders took the long way around to miss Jones but nobody else went down - and out . Jones walked to the pits. -The race then settled down wi th Mert Lawwill losing second place to Dusty Coppage In the early laps. Coppag e made a gallant tryon the lead posltlon and came within five second late in the race before the engine went sour and then he was fighting on one cylinder to hold off Lawwill in the last five laps. Many Private Battles Mos t of the action during the perfect' afternoon for raci ng centered around fourth, fifth , sixth, seventh and eighth. Dan Haaby moved up fr om the back to start picking off riders one at a time. After a many-Iap battle with Dick Ham mer, who worked his way from 22nd to fourth in 63 laps, Haaby flna1ly took over ' fourth and appeared "In" until the last nine laps when he dropped out and headed for th e ptts , Cal Rayborn and Bob Ball ey waged their own private race for nearly thi r ty laps fo r fifth spot with Raybo rn holding on at the drop of the flag. . Action-side It was " Banzai" Bill JarnIson, the rapid san Jose Amateur, who gave the fan s a thrill by taking a header over the Jump on lap 61 after stor;nlng from 31st starting position to 11th in 32 laps . Although stunned, Blll was later able to wal k off the track under his own power . Dick Dorresteyn again lost all of his face shields but chose to ride It out rather than stop for a fresh cov er . Most comical was another first for Ascot when Jim Berry and a stray bird collided on the front straightaway. The bird, minus many feather s, went berserk, new through the grandstand
