Dav e Hansen an d F rank Gillespie battl ed all the way for s econd spot on Sunday w1th Hansen and hi s Kawasaki taking
the honors.
Skip Van Leeuwen made it look awfully easy in winning his third T .T . 100lapper at Ascot. It was by far his best
and easiest of the three and there should
be many more to come for the colorful
guy from Sherman oaks.
However. Triumph does not appear !xl
bave it all locked UP as it has in past
Seas005. Much of the race found HarleyDaYidsons holding three of the first flve
positioos and only a stroke of late-lap
bad luck kept the lfilwankee brand from
taking three of the first six payolr spots.
H- D has gone to work for '68 and it
appears that the effort, the best ever in
the west, will be paying off before the
season Is over.
The Sidehacks
Three- whee led action saw the sidehacks on Sunday open the show w1th two
heat races and a six-lap final. Wlde
slides and close raclng produced Doug
Bingham and Ed Wade as the winners
of the feature on the H- D.
The colorful .. Hacks" put on a wild
show, using much more of the course
than the two-wheelers. 'lbe hacks featured H-Ils, BSA, Honda, Triumphs and
a Bultaco.

Mert Lawwi1l., like Van Leeuwen, appears to be getting better w1th age. He
now has a second and a third in the only
two TT outings this year. Cal Rayborn

led the Houston National and then ran in
the first five all the way last Sunday. He
Is not noted for his shori track and TT
ability.
Dan Haaby and Gene Romerobavealso
switched to H-D and will be even bigg er
threats OIl the bali-mile than they are on
the TT track. They have Mel Lacher to
back them IlP when oval time comes.
TII1s Is not to say that Triumph and
their many riders are not still the

Hammer Hauled
Best come-from-behind ride in the
lOO-lapper was tamed In by Dick Hammer. A super slow time trial stuffed
him so far back in the lineup that the
front row would have bad to phone him
long distance. Dick came all the way UP
and Ioept passing riders to climb near the
top at the finish. The only rider to pass
him was Haaby.
