SLOPPY, SANDY SALI AS SCRAMBLES SlDry by La rry Stewart Photos by lI a r ry smi th First pla ce tr ophy t akers line up at day' s end. The ultimate that District 35 and 36 winter scrambles riders can ask lor Is good weather and a race organized by the salinas Ramblers M.C. on their long, sandy track. They got both on February 25 when the Ramblers held their third of lour scbeduled winter scrambles. A total of 304 riders showed their appreciation by putting on an extremely fast show over what is generally considered to be one of the toughest tracks around. The surlace 01 this big track is covered with six to twelve inches of wet sand, and even the best riders sometimes look sloppy in the corners . As usual, the 40-incb Experts and Ama te urs provided the most excitement for the 2,000 spectators on hand. In the Expert Main, Triumph-mounted Bruce Anderson (No.2 high point man In Disirict 36 last year), started out In tllth place but soon picked his way through the field for the win. Alan Kenyon (5L) did his best to catcb Anderson, but never posed a serious challenge. This was Bruce's s econd win at Salinas of the year . Kenneth Price (49P) duplicated Anderson's performance in the 40- inch Ama teur main. He aiso went through the first corner in tllth and quickly passed every- one to take the first place trophy . Price bas one of the best looking and mos t ferocious Trium phs in captivity, and he did everyone In down the lo ng Salinas straightaway. Dlve Cadwallader (26M) won both the 4D-inch and the 200cc Novice Mains. Rider s In both classes are wondering when he wlll make Amateur. The only mi stake the Ramblers made all day was their decision to run eig htee riders in the 250c c Novice Main EvenL Granted they had a tough problem here since there were 66 250cc novices entered, but eighteen riders is just too many for a race on this track. A rider was injured at the finish line near the end of this Main, and things got so cont us ed that It had to be rerun . Jean Mireault ( 129T) and Bob Bowers (18 5F) battled for six laps after the restart, with Bultaco-mounted Mireault finally taking the win. The last of the Ramblers' winter scrambles wll1 be held on lvlarch 24. (Resul ts on page 20) 70Dec MODEl V-7, THE J968 STANDARD Of THE AMERICAN lOAD.
