It was a four-way duel in the 250cc class with the local favorite Xavier Tesnado on a Kawasaki nar r owly shading Ame rican rider Steve Coope r of Chula Vista on a n Identical mount, whic h he borrowed fr om Angel Rosa of Mexl call, when his own BSA was wrecked during pr actice . The local defending champion, Carlos lrtbe whose r egula r ride, a BSA was tor n down for repatr s, was loa ned an Os sa by Richard Ray of Gardena. The cycle was a fine mac hine but was set up for desert use an d had knobble tires which gave very poor traction on the smooth fast track. The poo r traction and havin g to learn how 10 race a twostroke were too much even for a rider of his sk ill and he was bea ten by his friend and fellow towns man San tos Zamorra, on a Bulta co . In the Open Class, Ste ve Cooper on the bor rowed Kawasaki and Pa ul Br anson on his Velocette put on a s how that the fans will long remember. At the end of three motos they were tied for first place and a 5-lap match race, to decide the winne r, was set UP . In the 5- lap even t the le ad changed han ds four Urnes and the race e nded In another tie which res ulted in the gr a nds ta nd emptyi ng onto the track and the fans de manding a r e match. The judges agreed and i n the final race Steve Coope r c r os sed the fini sh a little ahe ad but you could have cover ed both bikes with a Kleenex, they were that cl os e . The 100cc class also resulted In a tie but for second position. The runoff saw Enr ique Martinez of Mexlcall on a Yamaha beat out Bob Ce r nuda of Gardena for second s pot. Ric hard Ray , a lso of Gardena, was never threatened for firs t place. The U.S. had no r eprese ntatives In the lightweight division but the officials ile allowed Dick Ray 's lovely W , Nora to ride her Hodaka in the me n's even t " Jus t for fun." She would have trophi ed too as s he fini shed in the top thre e in each rnoto , Mexico dominated the 175cc class with Ka was a ki-mounted -L e o n a r d o Medina capturing top mone y followed by Enrique Mar ttnez on a Yamaha and Xavier Rodrigues on a n ts lo, ~*~~ .. ..
