It had rai ned Saturday , but the wea ther was grea t on Sunday mornin g wit h a tempera ture of j ust 75 degrees. The sa nd wa s sti ll moist w hi ch k ept th e dust down per f ectly . Th e start was set back one hour to allow f or l at e come rs . At 11:00 , after one false start , the combined 250cc and open class we re away , headi ng fo r the smoke bomb three miles o ut . J ust afte r the smoke bomb. th ere was a twe nty foot drop o f f into a s and wash wit h a co uple of smaller bumps on the o ther s i de. Th e l eaders at thi s point were two Hu sqv arn as: 'L i ndstrom. the Swedi sh s tar. wi th J .N. .Rob ert s #2 ri ght on hi s tail. Gar y Conra d. #21x on a 250 Greeves. was o nl y thr ee fe et behind Rober ts. T hen th ere wa s a bi g roar and here c ame Joh n Gaetz. #39 o n a bi g Tri umph. He cle are d the entire drop off and landed on. hi s fron t wheel with a cras h . He t rie d to hold o n. but made a co uple of qui ck t urns and e nded up si deways but was able t o get goi ng on th e s econd ki ck . B ergqui st and Lind strom duel ed back and f orth with B er gqui st fi nal l y pulling i nto t he fini sh li ne fir st. winning it i n one hour and fifty min ut es . L i ndst rom pulled i n second but as he was not e nte re d in the rac e. Gary Conr ad offici ally was seco nd on a 250cc Suzu ki . Mike P atri ck . #7 . pulled in thi rd on hi s 7 50c c Nor ton T wi n. and Ste ve Kirk •. # 27 . took fourth with hi s Triumph 650cc . Dean Goldsmi th was 'second, taki ng fi rst A ma t eur . J ack Froelich was thi rd . and J ame s Jackl ett fi nished fourth.
