FORT SUTTER BENEFIT RACE By Dale McKi nnon Each year since I can remember the Fort Sutter M.C. has put on a March of Dimes Benefit Race , which is usually a huge success and this year was no exception. Over a hundred sixty riders showed up. It was ' a real cold daY, January 28, but that didn't seem to dampen the enthusiasm of riders or spectators. It was supposed to be a r ough scrambles, k nob b i e 5 recommended. As it turned out it was hard and dry and lots of ruts. In the Powder Puff , Sue Childress picked up where she left off last year, in the winner' s circle . She had a front line start and led all the way - riding a flawless race . Debbie Jac kll ne was in strIking distance mos t of the ti me, but Sue didn't make any mistak es. The only restart of the day was in the 100 Novice Semi, an d guess who was leading before the restart? That's right, Sparky Pinota, r iding like a champ, On the restart he blew it and didn' t make the Main; this is about the third or fourth time for Sparky and he was on a fast Moto Beta. But that's the way it is for him most of the time. Ronnie Gonnella went on to win the 100 Novice Main with Vic Krill and Jim Ferroni right on him. They pushed Ron several taps before Vic gave out and Jim nailed down second place. In the 100 Amateur/Expert Main saw John A. Genna! take a quick lead of about a wheel-length over Ron Long. Then in the back stretch Harry Dring came up and took them both . All three were peg to peg down the straight. Ron dropped back, then took over the lead again. In the meantime, James Childress was moving steadily through the pack but got stuck in fourth until Ron dropped out with btke trouble. Harry won the race but was disqualified ' for cutting the course. There was a real wild scramble in the 200cc Novice for the first turn with three bikes coming out almost sIde by side. Greg Moore had a slight edge . Harold Kunsman and Joseph Boll ended up fighting for second with Joseph winning out after several laps - a real close race all the way. Curt McMahon thought he had the 250 Novice Main all sewed up but 1 guess he didn't reckon on Thomas C. Hammer who came up and took the lead away from him and proceeded to leave the field far behind. All the positi ons were strung out after the first several laps. The best race of the day in my opinion was in the 250 Expert Main. It seems to me there is mor e action in the 250 clas s than all the others combined. This race was pretty one-sided as Ca r l Cranke and Paul Johnson, both on the new Suzuki singles, far out -classed the rest of the field. They finished one -two with Miles Anderson riding a beautiful but fruitless race as his CZ couldn 't even come close to the Suzl es . The 250 Amateur Main proved the most interesting as Jack Driggs got off the line !irst, with Fred Bush about a wheel behind . Rober t Hoffman moved up to make it a little tighter. At one time it was three abreast down the straight, then Robert took ove r the lead . The lea d changed four times with a different rider each time. The last leader and winner Robert Haustein came from last , passing one or two riders each Iap , He really rode a spectac ula r r ace; would like to have seen him an d his CZ agains t the Suzies. It was a four- way go for firs t in the 500 Novice with Steve Young out on top with a CZ. James Skelton moved up to make It a clos e race an d took over the ********** : fOR EXHIBIT SPACE: • : in TEEN-TIME U.S.A.: • : at Anaheim Convention Center: : • April 6 through 14th 9 days : • call by March 15th • • : (n4) 533-3131 : ********** he:~~I~o~O~~~:~ ~~~~~~':~: ~ DAYTONA RIDERS AT CARLSBAD THIS SUNDAY the last big one to get ready • Pit gates open at 9:00 a.m, with the races going at 1:30 p.rn , Eighteen-yearold Ron Pierce, !be 250cc winner last month , will try and put it on the veteran for the second straight time. He finished third at the Astrodome indoor short track last week in the Amateur class but when it comes to Carlsbad road racing he runs against the Experts. Once again this is a Sportsman event and open to all riders on all size s of equipment. Once again there will also be a production street-machine class for all machines 250cc's and under. If you want to see many of the possible Daytona winners for the last time in action belore the big one in March then this Sunday is the date for the final runs down at Carlsbad Raceway, Carlsbad, csur. lead when Steve conked out, it looked like he had it in the bag, but one can never tell . Bill Evans and Byrl Barron rode side by side for several laps but it was Evans in second by a wheel. Richard Whlteacre came back to the wars after a fairly long layoff, on another bike no less. It seems he never rides the same bike more than once. He was sporting a 441 BSA this time and pulled a third, with some stiff competition in the 500 Amateur- Expert, like Don Brumbelow who copped second and Don Stover to name several. All the races were good, some close and some not s o close like in the 650 Novice. Number 94 wheelied into first only .to lose out to Charles Storm . He and Storm made a shor t showing belore 94J took it back, and stretched it out. The 650 Amateur/Expert was the same way with all four places two or three bike lengths apart. It was a good day from all standpoints, maybe a li ttle cool, there was enough excitement to keep even the coldest of tans a little warm . (Results on page 20) Jody Nicholas and his BSA tries lor two in a row in the big bike class . Jody will also be entered for the tirst time on a 250cc rig in the lightweight division. It's the last warmup for Ralph 1Nbite and the 350cc Kawasald and once again the new 500cc Suzuki will be 1n action. CHECKERS M.C. Checlcer Chase - Refreshments ST.
