' DOME- DROPS: The Gala ev ent known as the National Short Track Champions hip in the eighth wonder of the World the Houston As trodome, is over an d what a show! Almost 32, 000 paid cus tomers an d hundreds of freeloaders were on han d to s ee the firs t and als o the bi gges t Nationa l in 1968 cycling. It was one of the biggest nig hts for this ~riter-announcer to be s tanding in the middle of the famed Dome wi th riders li ned up on bot h straightaways and the twelve National Champions directly in (r ont of the two million dollar scoreboard. All of the Na ti onal winners r e ceive d large ovations when I introduced them an d it meant as m uch to me as it did to them, I am s ure . U Selling The Sport Due to the fa ct that Texas has not had a ma jor cy cle race in over 25 years we estimated that at lea s t 90% of the crowd was watch ing their fi r s t pr ofe s sional cy cl e race. If thi s is not doing the job of selling the sport an d the machine s then nothing ever will . The riders In the colored leathers really stood out under the powerful li ghting setup. Ea ch and everyone looked like a cha mp and the cr owd was standi ng more than they were sitting. Califor nia Amateurs swept the ten-lap final an d it was one- two- thr ee for the teenagers fr om the Golden Wes t . Din Haab y ha d the Nati onal all wr apped up on his new H- D Sprint that he was r a cing for the first time until that unexpected spill with only two laps to eo. It was only the second time in memory tha t Haaby ha s fallen off on an oval in compet iti on. All of the Ha r l ey Big- Wigs fr o m all over the country were on hand to watch Haab y an d the ne w wes t co as t Sprint te a m of Dan, Gene Romero and sponsor Gary Bray. They came withi n two laps of making it the be st ever. The ne w 250cc Triu m ph r idd en to vtctor y by Gary Nixon is not a "Cub" but is known a s a " Tr ophy 250. " Th e Cub, if you wi ll r e mem ber , was or ig inally a 200cc machi ne with far less ponies than the new Trophy mod el . Nixon also has a new Sonic wel d rram e on his Tri umph an d says it is the grea tes t thi ng to hav e and handles like a dream. It is made right here in the Los Angeles area by former road racer ' Ray Hensley. Nine ty Experts tlme-trialed and only 50 ma de the show. It was r ougher in the Ama te ur class where s eve n t y r iders trie d the clo cks and only 27 made the show. Ri ght after the races were compl ete d the pr omoter s , the Pace Management Ccrp,; were planning for next year . The short track will be back for sure and ma ybe a full-sized Daytona type motorcyc l e show- plus a T .T,! Hard luck rider was F r ed Nix the Oklahoma ace. Freddy wiped out his first Sprint in practice and then knocke d himself out of the races in the heat race when he was unable to av oid the fallen Ron Kruseman. • They Remember Resweber Upset of the night was Elliott Schultz on the ne w 250 Yamaha s ingle, beatl~ Nixon in the heat race on the final lap Mechanical troubles in the feature put him out early and he nev er really had a chance to try for two. Two champs that were ente r ed neve r showed up . Dick Mann was at the Os sa fa ctor y in Spain and di d not make it ba ck in ti me. Al Gunte r was 100 busy ge tting r eady for Daytona a nd also failed to make it. One of the promote r s s tate d after the race that if the s a me show was brought back to the Dome in the next two months he fe ll they could fill all of the 54 000 seats . We' ll work on tha t next y~ar. . We were in town three day s ahead of ti me to do publicity work with Nixon and Sam:ny Tan ne r . Texas gives as good or better coverage to cycle racing tha n you will fi nd an ywhere else.
