carburetor, M.G. magneto. What do these
components describe? Race car or boa t?
No sir! That's a 1960 Triumph tha t was
unveiled at Lions Drag Strip by i ts owner
Bill Sauer of Lakewood, canr,
Bill felt that the basic Triumph was a
good engine, but tha t did not shut out the
Idea for i mpr ovem ents. What if you
could appl y the "Desmo" set up that was
s ucces sful for Ducati and the Mercedes
300 SLR racing ear? Maybe an incr ease

Bill bundl ed his Triumph drag bike and
cranium of Ideas into the s hop and
presence of Mr . Neil Thuesen. Who was
thi s Thuesen guy and did he know any thing about engines? Well, Neil was the
owner and builder of the orry midget
race ca r tha t " Wild Bill " Can trell dr ove
to countles s victories on the racing errcults until r etirement a t the age of 50
years. Thues en also built an Offy- power ed sports ca r tha t set the pr os on their
ears.
After the Des modromic cam and gear
train design was off the drawing board,
Thuesen applied for a patent that Is still
pending. What a beautiful job of casting
and machine work has been done to
accomm odate the changes made. Youcan

Thi s firs t day out at the drag s trip was
only accompanied by one run through the
traps and the elapsed time was not impr essive; Ignition was faltering and preventing gasses from lighti ng up at the
top end, to gain the rpm expected In l1nal
ac hie vemen t.
Bill promi ses the problem will be
s olved and he, along with Thuesen are
building a dyno for test purposes. Even
In that department they can 't be conventional and us e the water brake system
pr es ent in most dynos . This dyno will
have a centrlfuga1 nywheel that provides
the engine load.
It's just pos si ble that in the future the
Des modr omic conversion Idt will be
avai lable at the retail market.
Race Results
Entries were below normal due to the
threat of inclement wea ther, but so mehow guys that own Harley- Davldsons
seem neith er to fear nor respect natu r e' s
whims with clouds and moisture.
Sherwin's A stock Sportster elbowed
aside the threats of his challenger s and
won the class honors turning 12.80 02.50.
