U ke many other members of the Roa d Rider s Committ ee , I have sat back and done nothing to answer the malicious attack s on various indi viduals, cl ubs and the RRC in particular whlch have appeared in r ecent issues of the Cycle News . Howeve r , this las t barrage has brought me to the poi nt tha t I fee l I must speak out. I do s o knowing that a s a motorcycle dealer I ma y be jeopa rdizing my very means of li velihood - because I depend upon the road riders of So. Calif. to be ab le to earn a li ving a nd s upport my fam il y and I know there will be some who do not ag r ee with me a nd ther efor e ma y choos e to take their business elsewhere . I hope not, but neverthe less I feel I m us t gi ve the readers what I fe el to be a true picture of the RRC. It is true we have had cl ubs drop the ir membership in the RRC lately, but we also have had other clubs join . Fo r you see in the RRC, just as In many ot he r clubs an d organizations , we have me mbers who are so men tally im mature that when things don't happe n the way the y want the m to, then they pic k up their ma r bles an d go hom e . But we, the clubs s till a ctiv e in RRC, do not feel that the way to solve pr oblem s is to run from them . We know the RRC is not perfec t, It may nev e r be, but we are here , wor king and trying to mak e it better. Many of us hav e had wha t we think to be good ideas onl y to be voted down by the ma jority, but we don't jump up and quit beca use we can't have our way. I pe r sonally could care le s s what some individual thi nks who has sat on hl s poc ke tboo k for the last two years an d done nothing but cri ticize . I will ac ce pt criticism fr om an yone as lo ng as he is willlng to work right alongs ide to help motorcyclmg, but not from someone who attends one mee ti ng a year an d then comes only to find fa ult. I say thi s not as a " Johnny-come latel y" either, for I have be en an active me mbe r of the RRC s ince the ver y fir s t night it started an d I have held every office but one in this pe r iod of time . But still my lo ngevi ty of service would not give me the right to sit on my backside and do nothlng but find fault with others who are at lea st trying. It is a well known fact that the only people In thls world who don't make an y mistakes are those ·...ho sit on their rumps and don 't do a damn thlng. I must also question the writer's Intent when in one colum n he s tates that every club who puts on a run has ' only one thought in mind - the almighty dollarand in hls ne xt co l umn states that the RRC's bank balance is much lower than the pr evious yea r . As if to say the clubs judge the s uccess of their runs by the profit they ma ke an d then using this same set of standards whlch he has jus t cond emned to proclaim that the RRC is falling because of the size of the bank a ccount. Speaking for myself and the Nor walk Centaur s I can honestly say that if we had taken the hours we have spent in preparing for our upcoming Yuma Run and applied thls amount of ti me in some for m of profi table moonl ighti ng we could have dona ted the money to the club and been much be tt er off financially, plus we wouldn' t have had to listen to any of the petty gr ipe s that always s eem to accompan y eve ry r un. However , li ke mos t of the othe r cl ubs in the RRC, the Cen ta ur s judge the s uccess of the i r run by the number of sati s fied parti cipan ts, an d not by the numbe r of dollars we have in the bank. Inctdentally, because of our past sue - MEET THE RACERS B)' lI" .~I , Aski n s Wall Fulton III The na me of Walter F ulton is one to be reckoned with in motorcycle competition. There are two of them to be reckoned with, the father Walter II, and sone Walter 111. Walt , the younger, catapulted into the upper s tra ta of cycl e racing by winning the 1966 Novi ce Rac e at Daytona, with an average s peed of 89. 122, shaving more than two minutes off the record then standing. His father ha d paved the way for him . The el der Walt is a West Coast official of the Ame rican Motorcycle Assoclation an d he has enjoyed a real reputation as a racer in AMA ev ents . However, he retired from co mpeti ti ve racing in 1957 and flve years later hls son and name- ces s with thl s r un, we will be able thls year to al s o hav e a fr ee field meet for the riders. So you s ee, we are progressing . Also, con tra ry to what yo u read In the " funny papers" (r efer r ing to the writer's column , not the Cycl e News an d/or Its staff) the RRC does not have a " damn- the - outride r s " attitude, Thls we do say though - don't just come and te ll us what you want, but also s end along some he lpful sugge stions as to how we could possibly do it in a manner whlch will be fair to all . In conclusion let me say thls latest ' barrage from some of our mo re prominent Juveniles will not be successful In destroying the RRC , beca use the RRC and what it is trying to do i s bigger than these petty attacks. In fa ct - what we will need even more than luck this year ma y have already been a ccompli s hed - to ge t rid of the deadwood! SHERMAN AMES Pomona, Calif. We, the undersigned cl ubs, ha ving read the above rebuttal , wish to add our voices in the hope that the readers will realize that we are here, working and trying to help Indlvlduals, club s and the sport of mo torcycling in gener al. We also feel that the new set of officers an d repr esentatives we now have will enjoy much s uccess thls year. Perhaps because ea ch one Is trying to justify what he fe els t o be his obli ga ti on to help this s por t and not by trying to s atisfy hls own pe rsona l ego. l-larll yn Roosa, RRC Secr e tary Ace of Cl ubs of Los Ange les Col oramas I.C. • or walk Centaur s l-I.C. The sensational young Walt literally gr ew up on a motorcycle In Or a nge County , Under his father's wat chful eyes, Jle was riding at the ag e of seven . Fo r four ye a rs he and hls father attended the ACA events, The boy rode 50cc machines and Initiated himself Into the realm of cycle racing. He learned that you had to be not only good in handling a bike but tough to cope with co mpetitors an d brave to win your laurels, During those years young Walt was a s tudent at a high s chool a mere 40 miles fr om his hom e In Or ange , He s pe cialized In mechanical and te chnical co urses . driving his machine to and from school wor king on it a t night, and racing ove; the weekends . Eve n though hls fa the r the n worked for U,S. Suz uki , young Walt enjoyed the immense distinction of being an Amateur s pons or ed by Harley- Davidson, which spared nothlng in he lping Walter HI to rise to the top of the cycle r a cing ranks. Young Fulton attained Exper t status, and the elder F ul ~.on is Sales Manager for Johnson Motors, West Coast Triump h dis tributor s . Oniy 19 years of age , a co llege dropout after one s emester , young Walt ex pects to be drafted an d says he is not only willlng but gla d to devote several years of hls youth to the service of hi s nation. ' Then, he says , it will be tim e eno ugh to return to the professional ranks and bulld his reputation. A veritable ti ger on the race track , young F ul ton is a very quie t and unassuming youngster off the track . He says that right now cycle racing is hls whole life and obsession. He lives very s imply , with no Indulgences, and s pends hls non-cycle time quietly at home. Practically all his friends and a cquaintances are cyclis ts . He talks interminably with them, on every ang le and a spec t of cycle racing. He says that this Is the time of hls li fe when he feels that it Is wise to learn as much about cycle racing as he possibly can and also to ge t in as much experien ce as he can, Later, young Walt expe cts, there will be time for other thl ngs .
