Donaca had tir e ..::J Long, tall Larry Parker established C,) problems all night and never did get going r eally well, while the previous two weeks' winner, Chuck Hodson, failed to make the s cratch Main and only managed a fourth In the handicap. A practice se ssion held on Tuesday night helped many of the riders sort out their gearing and!am1llarlze themselves with the track. A point of fact is that no less than five riders broke and lowered the track r ecord dur ing time trials. And l'd bet one Mike Welton will attest to the advantage of the practice. Intermission brought some youngsters on bicycles out for a wheelle contest and 1 must say one fell ow there, around age 10, could ride his rear wheel as long as room would allow. Quite a feat, cons idering one must balance AND pedal . (Results on page 16) him self as the man to beat as his deter mination and fas t r iding carried him to a clean sweep of the Indoor races Jan. 26 In Portland, Ore gon. Dropping the track record alm ost one full s econd, Larry scored wins In the trophy dash (has yet to lose one this season), heat races, sem is, and finals . This was Parker ' s first major win this year and he did It twice In one night, winning the scratch Main Event and backing It up with the handi cap Main. We' ll no doubt see this boy In the number one spot agai n. Actio n on the track was fas t and fur ious with spills aple nty. R. Ca r r oll unloaded during the s cratch Main, missIng his chance at the win after showing in the earlier events he had mor e than an outsi de chance of besting Parker. >. C,) B y Don Wall en ·Mud Scrambles" Of cour se It wasn't Intended, but the third E 1s i n 0 r e Mud- scrambles was r eillly something else, on saturday, Jan. 27. A very limited number of die-hard r iders , wives and friends stayed 10r one of the mos tfun andexciUngget -togethers ever held. Problem s, like not being able to read number s on pla tes, and r ider s who could not see, didn't stop anything. The rain didn' t start until the r aces did and conver sely It didn't stop until the Sweepstakes. A r iders' meeting was held to decide w llether to race or not, = and entry fees were offer ed to be re- 3 turned should anyone decide to load up. ~ ELSI ORE been r iding his Harley Spor tster , is letting It rest to ride a good r unning Bultaco. Anyway, It didn' t take Spaulding long to get back In the groo ve as he went on to win thi s class with D. Brooks getting a second and J . West catching third. NIGHT SCRAMBLES The 100' s seemed to be able to ignor e the mud and Jus t flat fiy as we wllnessed In K. Tennis ' win In the Sweeps. Between Hopkins, the eventual winner, K. Tennis, Holbrook and H. Egge. It took no time at all to make a r ace out of It. D. Hopkins and his Dad bring Holbr ook to the track every week. This makes the second week that Hopkins has won and I must say these young fello ws are getting experience that should serve them well • .,; '" :; Sweepstakes ::l :;; ~ III • 3 250 Expert Mudslingers e f This was really a riot watching these guys try to develop a s tyle for the mud. Some, like F . Spaulding who has come back to Elsinor e after a long tim e away, developed a " s tick your neck out" sty le, so the mud sli ngs somewhere els e , turn left, lean r ight.
