Th e purpose of the program is to fa mlli arize tho s e now an d planning to r ide cycles in the best te chn iques for s afe oper a tion. Dr. Wl1Iard M. Edwards, dean of educa tional s ervices at Valley State c ollege . said that the need for su ch a cour s e i s becoming mo re urgent. Th e s tatistics show that 25 pe rcent of all moto rcycl e accidents occ ur on the driver's fir st ride . More than 1,500 cycli s ts were killed in the nation during 1967 . More than 70 pe rcent of thos e kill ed were driving a rented or borrowed cycle, which the dean said Indicated tha t the re was a decisive factor of unfamiliarity with a cycle and how to ope ra te and handie one . There are now 350.000 licensed motorcycles in ope ration in the state of California now and Dean Edwards predicted that thls figure would cli mb ove r the million mark by 1970. The motorcycle is popular not only for pleasure purposes but als o for its amazing economy of operation. " It was the opin ion of all groups concerned that learning to drive an a utomobile was not le arning to ride a moto rcycle . Handi lng, eq uip ment, cente rs of gravity, stopping dis tances and reaction to wind curre nts all are differ- ent." ENTRY DEADLINE MOVED UP fOR NOR. CAL.
