Th e Novice class from last season sends a recor d amount of r ider s to the Amateur division and the big bikes for the fir st time on Sunday. No less than nine different riders won Main Events last year on the 250' s and all will be In action on the longer course this weekend. Not a single Exper t from the ' 67 TT ranks has retired. Skip Van Leeuwen and company will be ready and waiting for the 2: 00 p.m, startin g nag that will get the point battle underway once agatn on a once a month basis . A whole lot of !lrs t time Experts wlll find out that maybe 11 was not such a good idea to move up after all. The race will again s erve as the only warmup ride prior to the annual 100lapper that comes up a month from now on the first Sunday afternoon in March. A year ago Dus ty Coppage won the opener and the n took all season to again find the winning combina tion. Dusty will carry National Number 32 this year now that Sid Payne has offi cially retired from the ranks of the lumps and jumps. Odo m was undefeated In TT racing at Ascot last season In three times out . He will attempt, like many others before him , to be the first first time Expert to upset the many veterans on hand. The odds are all against hi m . . Jimmy finally gets back Into action for the first ti me since last Sept. when he broke a feet In the San Jos e Nationals. After much f1lm-flamming back and forth during the off-season he has again decided to stick with Triumph and is being backed as their number one rider in the Wes t this year. This Is the !lrst time a majo r distributo r has backed 100% plus and then some a first time Expert with only a half a season of oval track racing and less than ten TT races under his belt. Ji mmy pa cks Na tional Number 77 tha t was r a ced by Chris Draayer for two seasons . Taking his first ride as a Pro at As cot will be the highly regarded fi rst time Novice , Keith Mashburn. Keith has signed with the Yamaha company for the season and will ride the new 250cc single In competition for the first time on the TT tra ck and the n switch to a ne w five port twin for the half mile season co me April. Mashburn raced Indoors at Long Beach a few months ag o and won the 125cc Matn Event and Trophy Dash with ease. He has mucb experien ce on the scrambles tracks and will now try to put It to use for money and Yamaha. All r iders are reminded that the pit gates open at 10:0 0 a.rn , and close at Noon. There will be no ex ce pti ons and all riders must have the ir new' 68 AMA license with them when the y arrive a t the pit gates. No other form of paper , ca r ds, e tc . will be accepted. It's post time once again and the battle Is on for the next seven months.
