P holo s by Tom Culp Graced by the presence of Wes Cooley, Cr aig Road Speedway presented its second ACA motorcycle event of 1968 on Sunday, January 28. Under a clear but cold and windy sky, Las Vegas riders treated 1000 shivering fan s to an example of what's in s tore for the coming Nevada season . The 100cc led off with Mike North ( Bridgestone) grabbing the lead fi r s t. Then in succession almost all the riders had a chance at first place with Bob Tooley (Ya maha) emerging the winner at the checker , and Kawasaki rider Doug Miller r ight on his rear wheel. Showing great improvement and really out to win was little Gary Wells, who overcame a crash and a turned ankle to be the first lOOcc Sportsman a cross the line . Slory by Ge ne Drew In the 250 Sportsman go, again a mad s cramble took place as B1I1 Williams an d Uncle Bob Williams diced for the lea d after zapping Jim Gresham who took an early lead. Billy Williams was disqualified I for missing the jump and Uncle Bob came home followed by Carl Keller who was ecstatic in tha t he didn't fall off all day. John Randolph got a well earned third on his new Bultaco PurSang. The mixed sounds of the big bores an d 250 two-strokes signalled the start of the combined 250 and Open professional class. Eager to be tter his second place in the heat, Terry Griebel snaked his Kawasaki into the lead a t the start an d was neve r headed the rest of t he day . At the fi nish, Griebel was fi rst, Jones second and, af ter winning the heat, Chuck Hatcher had to be content with foll owing Gr iebel's Kawasaki and Jo nes' Harley into third. The track layout really doesn't give any handicap or a dva ntage ei therway as horsepower only counts in the long s t uff and the superior handling of the 250' s in the tight places adds up to a track that really makes the boys ride. Plans a re to pos sibly make some more changes for the better in the track, before too far al ong in the season. Vegas riders extend both a challenge an d tnvi ta tion for Califor nla riders to come up and take a sh ot at the cash pur ses at the next meet, Feb. 18th.
