The s tarting area was a mll elong drag race with one r oad c rossi ng in the middle whic h unloaded more than one r ider. Ste ve Hur d, #1 on a Nor ton Twin, won the dr ag race to the sma k e bomb an d jumped down the can yon off the fast trail with a good lead. The course twisted through the canyons an d a couple of s hort sandwashes , an d through some very deep and bumpy san d dunes which seemed to have no bottoms . It then changed to a steep hill and through the high hushes, jumped onto a fast fire road, and hack to the pits. Steve Hurd was still In the lead , with Mike Patrick, #7, Larry Bergquist, #888x on a r ed Bulta co five -speed Pursang, and Gene Smith, #p220 on a Tri umph, all bunched close together right on Hurd's heels . Gary Conrad , #21x on a Suzuki, was also starting to move up and was now In fifth spot. Pa trick took over the lea d when Hurd ran Into mechanical trouble; then Bergquist, Smith, and Conrad moved In, and the four of them diced ha ck and forth for the next loop. Coming into the pits, the leade rs got a quick check and took off toge ther and at the end of the pi ts, making the right bend into the boondocks, the y were so cl ose you could have put a blank et ove r them at eighty mil es an hour . Gary ClI1rad (211), here fi lling tile lank of Suzuki, was moylng up rapid ly unlll sidelined by a fla llire. On the third loop, Gene Smith went all out and put the pass on Pa trick In the tig ht stuff, but in the excitement they both sli d Into the barbe d wire fence just bef ore the second check. Neither was hurt, an d Smith was able to ge t up first and take off. After the check, Conrad was able to move up to second, but got a nat ti r e and had to drop out . The three- way dicing party of Smith- Pa trickand- Bergquist contin ued unill the fi nis h, when Pat rick pulled In with only a twenty-second lead after a fast pa ce, making the four loops in two hours and fifteen minutes. Larry Bergquist was abl e to ca tch Smi th and pull In second on his 250cc Bultaco, which sh ows how fast those five-speeds ca n go, as this was a fast course with three long s traig ht aways. Eighteen-yea r -old Gene Smith ca me In third. There was al s o a close race , r ight up to the finis h Une, be tween Jack Bye rs, #3 on a Triu mph, and Steve Kirk, #27 also on a Tr iumph, with Bye rs taking it by five fee t for fourth place . Hal Needham, #228, a novice member of the Viewfinders M.C. r eally tur ned It on in the last loop to finish 7th overall and first Open Novice . Lynn Fortner, #506, the fi r s t big bike Amateur, finished 8th on a 360 Husky. In the pits after the race, Patrick said he " li ked the r ace, all but the long start, and r an int o trouble trying to lap some at the slower trail bikes In the twisty, high bush section." Larry Bergquist was singing the praises of his new 'Of course, I haye a sl ened and nOlarlzed release from my parents, whaddaya th ink I am, a punk kid or somelh ln' ?" I Norton-mounled Mike Patrick emerged vlelorlous evera tt, bul he had to fight off strong cha llenges from five lop riders 10 do Ihe deed.
