I - -- VEGAS RACING STARTS WITH ABANG By Curly Price The largest crowd ever to watch cycle racing in Las Vegas, Nevada was on hand at Craig Road Speedway Sunday, Jan . 14 in perfect weather, to see the fir s t ACA-sanctioned all-motorcycle show. The action was fast and exciting as a total of 20 riders turned in spectacular riding and showmanship. The fastest man of the day was Jay Willey, riding a Montesa from Tom's Cycle Shop. Willey, one of the most rapid rid e r s in Las Vegas won all his heats, and in so doing was declared the Sweepstakes Winner for the day. The closest race, and one of the most exciting rides, came in the 7th Heat, as Bill Williams Jr. too k the lead on the second lap, and Monte Montoya started to push him hard. On the f 0 u r t b lap Montoya took the lead, only to have Williams pass him on the 5th lap, Montoya again made a determined bid on the 7th lap, but could not pass Williams. The crowd was on their feet during the race. Williams was declared the 250cc class winner tor the day. Another exciting duel, which kept the crowd cheering. took place in the 100cc class, as Mike North and Steve Slagle ran neck and neck all day. These two youngsters are destined to be two of the best riders to come out of this area in many years, a Ion g with the youngest member of cycle racing, Gary Wells . These three boys are nothing short of spectacular . Cycle racing will conti nue at Craig Road Speedway in the near future. CRAIG RD.
