Though everybody appears under control at this point on lap one of the Dec. 29 Main Events a
loud hassle took place the following time around when J im Rice (80y) spi lled and the black fI~g
was displayed briefly. Some saw I t, some didn't, and then the hay-rube started.

Spectators at San Jose joined in with
the Amateurs and Exper ts wbeneveryone
disagreed with the officials on Friday,
December 29. The rhubarb occurred in
the combined Main Event for the two
classes. On the second lap two riders
went down, starter Chuck Guluizzo pulle d
out the bla ck flag and several riders saw
it exposed on the track. When the two
riders got up and started again alm ost
im mediately Chuck put the flag away.
, Phil Cancill a and Dave Bostrom had
both seen the flag and pulle d into the
infie ld. When the r ace wasn't stopped
Phil lost bis cool and took vengeance on
the flags, then literally thr ew his bike
which hit the flags and their stand punctur ing his gas tank . During this the
crowd and othe r r ider s were also voici ng
their displeas ure .
As the r ace conti nued Bobby Self was
still leading Jim Rice and Mike Yarn .
Jim became tangled on the back straight,
s liding into the guard rail where he laid
pinned to the guar d r ail by bis bike .
After another three laps the black flag
came out with the chec ker ed and the
r ace was called short. In spite cif all
verbal protests the officials declared the
race finis hed. J im Rice was helpe d from
the track without any serious injuries.
Phil Cancilla then filed an official pr etest and payoff was withheld awaiting a
review. The riders are voici ng a des ire
for new officials. A r efusal to ride may
be In the offing unless the pr oblem is
resolved. ThIs v..a s the third San Jose
event that has ended in such disagreement .

Peace at San Jose. The officials and
the r ide rs had a meeting of mind and
matter this week and the races at San
Jose on F riday, Jan. 5 were run without
the wild pr otests of the previous outing.
Time is a good cure and a better cloc king device reduced the conflict to good
cooper ation. Chuck Gal uizzo is one of the
best s tarter s in bike racing and deserv es
a lot of credit for well- run events .
A change of s chedule was put in effect
with all the transferred riders. Mor e
Amateur s and Experts s igned in than
Novice s . The first place heat winners
wer e transferr ed to the Main and and
and 3rd and 4th to one of two semis.
The 1st and 2nd r iders went to the Main
to make up an a- r ider event. The Novices also J0 i ned the Amateurs and Exper ts in drawing for starting positio ns
in the heats .
Crow d favorite Phil Cancilla is still
finding the going rough in his home town
and couldn' t finish bette r than s econd.
Mike Yarn also of San Jose Is s till the
point leader , dete rm ined to retain his
lead, for the end of the season pay-off.
The Novice r iders have produced three
very fast and promising riders. Don
Castro, Terry Sage and Jerry Clark;
these three are starting to occupy the
winner' s circle often.
