.. .... .... SILVER CITY SCRAMBLERS EUROPEAN SCRAMBLES ,. By K . Scales January 7 was a beautiful day for a .motor cycle race and the Silver City Scramblers Motorcycle Club of Las Vegas, Nevada provided the race In the form of a European Scrambles. Off the start line at 9 0' clock were the trail bikes who for one hour would test their luck and skill over the 1.3 miles of desert, sandwashes and a few hills and sharp turns. At the end of the first lap, Sachs -mounted Casey Folks led the race and was able to maintain this position, crossing the finish line followed by Bob Tooley (Ya m a h a )" and Nick Rlchen (Honda). The big bikes were off at 10: 30 a. m, and Gr eeves- mounted Max Switzer led the first lap and then proceeded to methodically lap the entire field . FollowIng Switzer across the finish line were Ken Camran and Red Van Buskirk, both on CZ's. Calif. 90004 Learn to • ride program launched in San Fernando A Motoryc le Rider Training Program, conducted by the L.A. Adult School Is expected to be underway by the end of January , according to Dr. Willard Edwards, Dean of Educational Services at san Fernando Valley state College. After numerous Inquiries and requests for a training course for both young riders and adults, Dean Edwards called a conference of interested people . This conference concluded that while the rate of motorcycle accidents have decreased somewhat (the increase in the number of cycles has been greater than the accident rise) there is a need for safety work in this field . The conference rejected Ideas of enforced safety, such as helmet legislation , and turned instead to the planning of trai ning programs . It was decided that the L.A. Adult School was best suited at this time to arrange a pilot program. The Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers and , BSA Western agreed to obtain the needed equipment. Jack Burgan, Driver Education teacher with the LAAS and longtime cyclist, was asked to develop the study program. Cooperation has been offered from various sources, includ ing Congressman James Corman, State Senator Lou c ousanovtcn, cycli s t Bob Braverman, and representatives from the Roiary Club, the Kiwanis, The AAA of Southern canr., California Insurance Producers Association, Allend' or Pr oduction s, and Cycle News. Previously, tralning programs have been held by the Downey police and by the Explorer Scouts with the LAPD and BSA participating. Elsewhere, especially in Canada, extensive programs have been developed, and have met with considerable success. The pilot program of the LAAS would draw heavily upon experiences with piror programs. However It has the capability of per manence. If the pilot pr ogr am Is successful It will become an on-going part of the L.A. Aduit School curriculum and would be given once or twice a year at numerous loca tions , providing a convenient and consistent source of rider training. The adult school age limits would be waived In this case to permit riders under eighteen to participate. Clearly this is a significant step In safety promotion and a practical one. The organizers are enthusiastic about Its chances. Ar rangements are being made for every essential except one STUDENTS. Here every motor cycle enthusiast can cooperate . W atch this column for fur ther details and spr ead the work to those who want to learn to r ide or want to lear n more about riding. The Driv".· Education Program 6iS cut down considerably the number of auto accidents Involving young drivers. The motorcycle iralnlng program can offer similar benefits to the motorcycle field . A majority of cycle accidents happen to new r ider s (many on the first ride and with borrowed machines) . Development of a really good training program could conceivably cut cycle accidents enormously. This makes much better sense than the tacit ass umption (he ld by some legislator s and many non-riders) that accidents are inevitable so put something on your head. If we Improve our safety r ecor d notic eably, perhaps we can convince such thinkers that we don' t really need their help. • IN THE DESERT: SO. Cal. European Scrambl es 1/7/68 ' 1st Place 250 ex.
