SONGS AND SILLIES "IF" (Witlt apologies to Rudyard Kipling) TRIBUTE TO THE VICTORS TEMPTATIONS By By C!'rol Sims /l you can crank it on when those about you H ave backed off' cause they saw the fence was near If you can charge through traffic on the outside And drift toward the rail without a fear If you can miss the show without excuses Or win the Main without a single boast If you can give tbe Eastern guys $ome credit And not say every charger's from the Coast By Slanley G. Scales lanley G. Scales To excel beyond one's wildest dreams, To reach a level beyond compare, To guide one's mind like simple beams, I s a task that few would dare; But listen to me and hear me out, As I relate to you a tale, Of how you can find without a doubt, Excitement, comfort and ale; Whence come the day you mount a steed, Its brilliance a sight to behold, And cross the trails at a risking speed, A treasure more filling than gold; If you can help an eager young beginner Who looks as if he really wants to fIy Continue on as dark creeps in; I gnore the curse of danger, Your mind only reels in a glorious spin, I t treats you as a stranger; And not begrudge him his initial victory When first you see his tailpipes flashing by If you admit there's plenty more to racing Than gassing it and turning to the left Befall unto the weakening threat, Enwrap your heart with want, Just never take the tempting bet, That to you it isn't a taunt; If you agree that it's a way of living At which you must be brave and cool and deft If you have learned not to expect a fortune In fact not to expect a single thing Except that real good deep down kind of feeling Which comes each time you hear your en~ne sing Because try as you-may you'll never forget, It's a hunger that man can't deny, That you didn't stay longer is the only regret, And a want is the gleam in your eye. The grip turns freely that's in your band; And the wind blows across your face; It's a feeling excelled by none in the land; As your goal is to win a race; The clatter of many metallic parts; This power is yours to tame; There's pleasure and sorrow in every beart; But yours is the road to fame; The number one plate is the goal to reacb; It's rugged and hard to lind; But to be the best is easy to teach; It there is no doubt in your mind; Nixon and Guild must have thought this way; For this combination is king; It makes no difference what others may say; Success to them it did bring; They may walk tall because they're the best; Although others tried equally hard; The outcome of the overall test; Left them with an image unmarred,; Come next year the tale may change; Another may be number one; But no matter how long or hard the range; All engaged will surely have fun. 2~Hour Emergency Then you, my friend, are what is called a RACER And just to know you is a special thrill. - Service (213) 443-4341 .' /l you can be on top and still be seeking _ KlIOwledge to improve your riding skill so.e:'88' AMSA REPRESENTATIVE r _ 'tlllHllltl OF a MONTE• Friendly Sales and Expert Service on Ali .Makes Open lIondays tIlru Fridays 8-5.
