The fifth lap saw Walden making with the baling wire repairs as Frank Morgan and Wood passed by. Fred Arnold was now fifth overall and first Novice was 12-year-old Scott SmIth rlgbt behlnd him. Larry Cook, who had worked his way up from 15th on hIs Yamaha 80, was In the third Novice spot. Walden drove his Fastass Sumblchl past Wood In the seventh lap but Wood powered his Yamaha single back Into third spot after check five. This bas to be the most powerful trail bike around! By now, Wood's hands werebleedJngfrom broken blisters and Walden's smooth riding Sumblchl breezed by the Yamaha with less than two laps to go. Jack Morgan finished with a stroke of luck when a grain of sand In the carburetor stopped his engine and he COASTED over the finish Une to take the win. BUSHMASTERS AT CANYON CREST story by Harold Walden Photos by Steve Higby Sunday, December 3 was a beautiful day for racing at Canyon Crest, Calif. as the Bushmaster M.C., of BannJng, put on their first European Scrambles. The banner dropped at 10: 15 a.m. and it was fast open country to check one, located on a rockY hill a quarter of a mile from the start. At check one it was Jack Morgan, Frank Morgan, Phil Wood and Ray Morrow. A fast, choppy onemile straight led to check two where it was Jack Morgan, Rich Walden, Frank Morgan, Craig LaChance and Phil Wood. Over two hills and Walden had the lead at check 3 wi th Jack right on his taU. The course had slowed by now with rocks, hills and ditches. Check four was a water-fJ11ed ditch good for low gear. More hills and ditches then check five, which has a 35-foot deep gu1ly which gave almost everyone some trouble. Walden led Into the gully and Jack Morgan came out first.A long, high gear upgrade led to check six, a sUck, oHcamber, left turn, which Frank Morgan discovered when he sUd down, letting Phil Wood Into third. Frank repassed Wood just before the first check but Phil took the lead again down the straight Into check two. Finally, after the water crossIng, Frank passed Phil and beld onto third place spot. Walden dogged Jack Morgan's heels until the third lap wben Jack finally opened a big lead, never to be passed again. Lightweights As the banner IlIt the ground all the lightweights were off, save the usual Bultaco. whose rider was kicking madly. It was L.E. Olvis, Norm McDonald, M.R. Montgomery and Bob Riley at the first check. Riley had taken the lead by check two and his Greeves was oever again passed. Approaclllng check five, Jimmy Crook. who had moved up Into seventh spot on Ills Bullaco, was slightly left of the course and missed the danger marks; spectators and checkers, wIlo tried to slow him, watched helplessly as he rode full bore over the 35-foot embankment, cleared a tree growing in the wash and drove straight Into the ground below. Everyone thought he was seriously injured until he woke up a few mlnutes later with only a few scratches and a possible broken nose. McDonald, on a HuskY, Olvis, on a Greeves, battled It out for second place for several laps and put on a really good race .untll Olvis got tired out and quit halfway through the race, leaving Mc Donald an easy second place. Big Bikes There were no 650's entered so It turned out to be a battle of the Triumph 500's against the BSA Victors, with Ray Nichols, on Ills Triumph, taking an early lead. Jim Bruns passed Nichols going Into check two with John R. Smith In third. Bruns held first place for several laps with an ever-Increasing lead, but, while trying to jump the water crossing his bar s slipped down and became progressively looser. As the. race continued the great lead he had built up was being wlllttled away by Smith on his Victor. Smith passed the Triumph with only one lap to go making it BSA's race. When the times were compared it was discovered that, on the fast 3.8-mlle course, the trail bikes and the 250's were lapping at almost exactly the same times, and both were turning taster laps than the 500' s. All classes managed to finish nine laps in the hour-long races. Trophy winners can get their gold at the Bushmasters next race near Beaumont, Calif. on January 7.
