Now racing goes indoors and under many ceilings until next February and March. Indoor rac1Dg starts to go at san Jose, Fresno and Loag Beach In the immediate area with san Jose runn1ng 00 Friday nights, Long Beach on saturday nights and Fresno taking the SuDda.Y night slots. The past season the National trail was a big one but '68 will find even more and a record lor a single season. Right now there are twenty-two on tap lor nen year. The 1968 national season will start with the Indoor races In the Houston, Texas Astrodome on February loth and finish at Ascot with the elgbt-mUer on october 12th. The Ascot riders should be out in force for the big ones next year as there are no less than TEN Nationals on half-mlle tracks. Ascot had the best safety record ever for an entire season and also provided some of the best rac1Dg ever in the last ten years. Dan Haahy, Skip Van Leeuwen, Mert Lawwill and Cal Rayborn all came UP as winners of national events. Dan and Skip scored their ftrst big ones this year with Mert and Cal taking their second National victories. Promising New Riders What was perhaps one of the biggest additions are the many promising new faces that came on strong In all three classes. The Novice TT and balf-milers have many riders that will go on to greater things In not too many years. California was blessed with championship callber half-milers, road racers and TT artists. This is directed to the riders wbo were Amateurs this past year that inclUde; Jimmy adom, Art Baumann, Walt Fulton, Larry WUhurn, PhU Todd, Ron Pierce, Lloyd Houchins and many more wbo will be moving UP to the expert ranks come the ftrst of the year. One of the reasons California, wblch has long been known for its abundance of rac1ng talent, will have a record crowd of new riders for the next few seasons is that the area enjoyed a record amount of races of all types. No End To It Most of the newer riders and the majority of the veterans are now competing In all types of events and few are specialists. Rac1Dg in California has now become a year-round sport on a pursepaying basis. T,here will be even more events next season. Actually, one season no longer ends and a new one starts, it is one continuing go-around. Crowds were UP at just about every event except Ascot wblch is the only track that runs weekly. The turnout was down there for manyreasons.Uyoumlss one at Ascot you can al_ys catch it the next Friday. About 95% of the famous and wellknown names in racing call California home. The percentage may be even greater next season with many more National and non-national races on tap. At the recent FIM (Federation Internationale Motorcycllste) Congress beld in Austria, President Nicolas Rodil Valle of Europe'S ru11ng organization announced that Wes Cooley, had of Southern California's ACA, has beeoYOlsdthe new president of MICUS, the FIM's offic1al1y recognized body in the U.S. secretary/Treasurer of MICUS, wbich unW now was &dquarted in Florida, will be ex-road racer and former AFM kingpin John McLaughlin.
