To mauy citizeas of the Pacific Northwest this is a rather distasteful time of year, but to the majority of ..atorcyclists it is welcomed with proDOUCed joy, for SOOD the eDduros will begin. By Wes Anderson Sr. The November 5th Ponderosa desert chase started with 93 open class riders roaring ott to the smoke bomb. Ron Fry (HUSky) of the san Gabriel Valley Club, was leading at the bomb and pulled away from the pack for two loop to take the win. Four minutes later second place Warren Siegfried 01 the Checkers Club pulled In on bis Triumph) was third, l7-year-old At" Baker on his Trlumph-Metisse was fourth, followed by fifth place Dean Crawford (Triumph). These riders are also Checker Club members. Petite Sue Greenlee trom Stockton, Calil. rode her big Triumph and was 1st open class girl. She left many of the men riders embarrassed. The season opener has been marked lor the last thirty-five years, by the Washington state Cbampionsbip Cowbell Enduro; sponsored by the Mount Baker Motorcycle Club, of BeJ)jngbam, washington. Since its beginning, in 1931, rider participation has grown trom seven anxious competitors on the starting grid, to this year's total of 285. originally patterned alter the Jack Pine, the Cowbell otrers a cbalJenge and scenery incomprehensible unless persooally witnessed. Wayne Garrett (Hodaka) was third and Gene Souza 51-year-old cigar smoking Hodaka rider was fourth, followed by Monte Lee Hodaka In fifth spot. Slxyyear-Old Howard "GrandPa" Lee, Monte Lee's dad, placed 32nd trail bike and gave a lot of the youngsters a riding lesson. Mary Brooks was 17th trail bike and 1st girl In. Mary beat her teenage son again.
