When I disassembled my
Tciu.mph clutch. 1 lost
one of the hub roller bearings. The
manllal says there are twenty but I
only count 19. Will it be O.K. to a~
.semble it with only 19? B.R. Canoga Park, CaI.i1..
AlS1IER: Yes, tbe loss of one
bear-
ing will not cause undue
harm. But why not just buY another
bearing?
QUEmON:
Almost every [oar
stroke engine f have
seen has three rings 00 the piston.
Ace three necessary and what detel'mines this? O.K. - Torrance. Calif.
AJIS1IER: Lets start with the neoes-
QUEmON: I
have an iron barrel
Greeves #34A engine.
I have been told that there is some
kind o[ Chevrolet condenser that
can be fitted to replace the standard unit [oe beuee service. Can you
help me with the pact numbee oe any
in/ormation on this? Also is theee
any quick way to checlc timing on
these beasts undee field conditiolIs?
T.H. - North Hollywood. CaliL
have a 1964 BSA
250cc which has a Triumph 65Q piston. The only series of
numbers 1 can find are BA. 14087,'
and 413. 1 am not sure o[ the bore.
Could you tell me what my total
displacement is? 1 wlJuld also like
to know how far this is ovecbored,
and how much lbis leaves me. B.W.Lubbock, Texas.
AlSWER: The replacement conden-
C-15 that bas a ~e of
of 2.6375-. I must assume that the
Triumph piston is stock size and
its dimension wouldthen he 2.795-.
The cYlinder of your BSA is now
.1575 overbored. 1 have no idea of
the remaining wall thickne"ss. That
could only be ascertained by a
visual inspection.
Your total displacement is now
21.64 cu. inches or 354cc·s.
QUEmOI; I
ser you need is a Delco
0-203 or equivalent. To quickly
field-time your Greeves. the piston's
position "in relation to top de a d
center must be checked. You could
do lihis easily witb a guage through
the spark plug bole. Tben the remaining steps of setting the points
at 5/32nd's before" T.D.C. witb a
.015 gap would be easy.
ANSWER: Your BSA 250 is a model
sity of one. This mst
ring is the lower one on a piston
and is responsible for oiling the
cy JiDder "II' alls. thus it' 5 ne cessi ty
.is established. The next ring or
rings are solely for retaining tbe
expanding gasses above the piston.
In engines of small displacement or
low compression. one ring may be
all that is needed. However. in most
engines above 250Cc the combustion
pressures are great enough to require two rings.
It's a fact that the fewer rings
that can be tEed. the better. Most
of the beat in a pis ton is tzansferred
from cylinder wall to piston via the
ring. because it is in constant contact with tile wall. while piston skirt
contacts are less conductive to beat.
due to intermittent friction witb the
cylinder. Rings are also additional
weight to, the piston. which may
seem unimportant but eveO' little
bit coonts in a higb performance
